Question Superchip....Good idea????

I sent an e-mail to Mike Troyer from Superchips inclining about his product. I am thinking about going with them just from reading the posts in the FAQ. Just would like to get some opinions from current Superchip users and those using other chips. Oh yeah, about how much would a chip run me? Get a MAF and filter at the same time?

IMHO, the R9 ROCKS.

if you are going ot get a MAF, be sure to tell this to Mike as he will need to make adjustments to the chip to compensate for the better metering. I ma cost you a bit more but it is worth it.

I do not have a MAF yet.....yet.... but do know I will need to have my chip re-calibrated for it.

Another chip to think about is the Johnny Lighting. He has great service, a matching Ram Air kit and an all around cool dude!!!

Inject-tech has a good chip too from what i gather.

The Superchips R9 is a good program, and Mike seems to provide very good service.

I like my Johnny Lightning Superchip. Johnny has been exceptionally helpful to me. AFAIK, it is a modified R9 program on the street side. His new race program sounds awesome. I will know after I get mine reburned.

I have heard very good things about the InjectTech chip, and almost went with them, until I ran into JL.

The Swanson and Sean Hyland chips have their adherents as well. However from what I understand, the Swanson chip's shifts are on the hard side, and more of an all-out performance chip.

Question

when i ordered my superchip (R9), i told mike that i was getting a pro-m also.
he said i should get the airaid system instead.
he explained to me that the pro-m leans out the mixture & the superchip does the same.
so to keep from getting detonation, they would reprogram the R9 for less leaning out.

so, in other words, the pro-m would lean it out, then the R9 would raise it up a bit, negating the difference.
i believe that is how he put it.
if i am wrong, someone please set me right.
i dont want to spread disinformation.

(i do love my airaid & superchip combo anyway. worth every penny!)

afj00svt - the chip was $225 i believe. custom programs are more.

Forgive me, but what is the Airaid system? A MAF filter combo? The chip would run me $225 and it would be tuned for the Airaid system? Thanks fellas.

check out the johnny lightning chips and ram air. i think alot people are getting in the 12's with this setup , have you seen this with the r9?. he seems to be a nice guy. i would asked whether the r9 or jl clip came out first, to see who did what. i think the jl came out first.

I just put in the Johnnylightning superchip and it's awesome. Noticeable difference in performance, an adrenaline rush. Both for the truck and me. Remember the first time you drove your truck? It's all there again and more.

Does a chip actually increase horsepower? About how much more with the R9?

Hey Meiwah98, If you want to believe the info on the package they come in, it says a 10 Percent increase in HP and a 15 percent increase in Torque. With out dynoing all I know is it's really makes a difference. Like a new truck. Gives you that warm fuzzy feeling all over again.

Thumbs up

i'd go with the jl setup i am waiting to get my superchip back from johnny along with ram air. its up to you but from talking to both mike and johnny i would go with johnny any day, cool dude. keep in mind last time i talked to mike he was pretty much a salesman and does not own a lightning, where johnny does. anyway that is my own opinion both are easy to work with.

Question

So where do I go to get the JL chip? Must I purchase the Superchip first, then have it reprogrammed?

Do a search for Johnny Lightning on this board. He's got a website. Send him an e-mail. You're doing the right thing by researching first.

I've had several chips and right now run a JL program and am very happy with it. The R9 seems to be very good, too. I have not ever run that one.

As far as HP increase goes, expect a solid 20rwhp gain with a _good_ chip...add a better inlet tube/filter kit (and see boost go up) and you'll certainly pick up more. However, more than the power increase, the driveability of the truck is much better with a chip than the stock programming. Shifts are better, part-throttle acceleration is better, etc.

I'm "old school" and have never been a big fan of chips. On the old 5.0 Mustangs, you could do everything a chip burner could with a distributor wrench and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. But, with these DIS cars and automatic trannies, the chips make a HUGE difference. I've run one since 800 miles on the truck, and I honestly would sell my L tomorrow if I had to drive it stock again. A chip and filter is worth a solid .5+ in ET. That's a big difference.
