Pulley Questions?

Hey just staring to get into the performance stage. So wondering what is the best size pulley to start out with. I've read the difference between 2, 4, 6, and 8 but just courious what is the best to start out with. Also what is the difference between the upper, lower, and idler pulleys? Thinking about going with K & N intake anybody had any problems with it? Thanks for all the recent help this forum really helps. I'm in the Military so this saves on some time with looking around. Just want to make sure to get the right stuff.

If your going to switch pulleys make sure you get a custom programmer and custom tune... This will be the key to the longevity of your motor and also best performance gains. You can get your tunes by email (mail order) or have a tuner set them up for you. Many would aggree or disagree on which pulley to start off with. Me personally I wouldnt waste my time on a 2lb pulley. I would go straight to the 4lber with new plugs(New Gap setting). Just be careful when you switch pulleys. ...An experienced tuner or tune can mean life or death of your motor.
As far as the CAI goes, the K&N should work fine. If your going to buy the K&N flat filter that replaces stock filter, it is alot more restrictive than the conical filters. If your short on cash, you can also improvise by cutting out the bottom of the stock filter box to get more air flow. This should help your CFM a lil bit..

The K&N FIPK will be OK. I had one on my truck for about a year and a half and never had a problem. I had the 4lb lower and a PSP tune (XCAL II). I think you will be happy with those three mods. I would put on those three at the same time.....It will be a kick in the pants from what you are used to.

Just call one of the tuners and tell them what your mods will be and which pulley you want and let them fix you a tune.

The lower pulley will give you boost and a little more torque, the upper pulley will raise the boost and will not have as much of an impact on the torque. In the early days nobody hardly ever removed the upper pulley. The lower pulley was changed because the Eaton pulley was pressed on the fear of damage to the SC on a new truck with a warranty wasnt worth the risk when the lower pulley could easily be swapped.

I can tell you that if you pull it into the garage or shop, install the FIPK, pulley and tune at the same time then fire it up and take it down the road you will be shocked. ....of course as soon as you get used to it then you want more and more....Good luck.

agree with above suggestions. I currently have a 4# lower, JLP CAI (with ram air scoop), TR6 plugs, METCO aux idler bracket (reduce belt slip) and dyno/tune using a Predator. Not a bad idea to do an exhaust upgrade also.

If I were to do it all over again, I would go with a 6# lower to start off.
