Iridium plugs
Jim's spark plug thread is getting too long, so I thought I'd start a new one. Check out this page: http://www.todaysnhra.com/editorial/nhr60052.htm
Anyone have any experience with these puppies? I am not seeking a power increase, research tells me that there is little to be gained from switching plugs unless yours are misfiring, but I am interested in safety and longevity. We know the stock platinum plugs are not safe, especially when we start modifying the motor, but I don't think the NGKs will last that long, and changing plugs in these beasties is an expesive proposition for us non mechanical types. I believe the Densos cost about $12 each, but if they last twice as long as the NGKs they are worth the investment. Comments?

I'm another one of those non-mechanical types. 25-30 years ago, I used to do all my own tune-ups, brake jobs, oil changes, etc., but things were simpler then, and I was broke.
Now I just pay (gladly) for a mechanic's services. But I was stupefied when I got an estimate of 2.5 hrs labor ($175 bucks) to change the freaking plugs in this truck.
That's a lot of money to pop out 8 plugs and install new ones for sh*ts and grins. Maybe not so bad if you only have to replace them every 100K miles, but I want to pop them out to "read" them and mess around w/ different temp. ranges, etc.
Is this estimate in line? Does it really take that long to change the plugs in these things? The job looks formidable to me, but I would think a trained mechanic could do it in 1-1 1/2 hours.

Hey guys just a quick question bout these Iridium plugs. Everybody on here talks bout the Denso Iridiums plugs, up here in Canada all I can find are the NGK Iridium plugs. My question is this, what is the difference. They sell them for $19.99 CND for a 2pack so it'll be about an $90 change up after taxes. Is it worth getting thses or should I keep searching for the Denso's?
Hey Neil, how did the little meet go at Sparta a few weeks back? Sorry I couldn't make it but maybe next time.

Yes, we're carrying the Denso's now, and I have to say we like 'em so far.
Met with Denso out at SEMA, & they claim a 5-7 hp increase in the Lighting. I took that with a grain of salt of course, as it's not easy to get more horsepower from a "stock" spark plug (meaning one that is not indexed & poly-gapped) unless there is a deficit of some kind existing. At least, getting more than 2-3 more horsepower is tough with a set of spark plugs, I should say.
With a fresh set in the Lighning, I have to say that it has a better idle quality, and tip-in, part-throttle & even heavier throttle response seems to be noticeably improved, subjectively speaking. There's no doubt that it "feels" better. Haven't been to the track yet, but so far, it does seem to pull at higher rpms a bit better, especially once in 3rd gear where load goes up.
Now that all sounds like a lot to expect from a spark plug, but those are my *informal* observations so far, and I stress the *informal* part, as those are subjective. No track or dyno so far, so if anyone actually does a properly controlled back-to-back, track or dyno test, we'd love to see that data.
We're dropping them in the rest of our vehicles here, regular F-150's, etc. and will report on those results when appropriate.
Anyone who would like a set is welcome to give us a call.

Denso 1 stage colder plugs
I did a before and after dyno on these plugs awhile back and it made 2HP more than the stock plugs.
So far they are holding up very well but not sure if i will shell out that much again for them.
Matt
Spiro,
Did you get my mail about a week ago?
