Complete new Lightning cylinder heads that have been ported and polished are about $1500.00 for the pair. The labor to swap them out could be from $500.00 to $1000.00. The best route may be to pull the motor or you can go the "High Risk" route too and remove the cab. You do not want to be bending over the fenders of these trucks. Bob "High Risk" has ported and polished heads installed, I have a set and another individual has a set too. Bob you need to report your results.

Dave,
Send me a note and we can talk data about the heads.

You really need to look at the chambers on these heads. I will post a photo. The SVO 2 valve heads will work and I believe that 38 Top Gun is using them. They have larger valves and the chamber maybe larger too which would lower your compression ratio.

I thought FORD had given up on shrouding the intake vlve to increase swirl or tumble after the dismal performance of the 86 5.0 heads. Believe SVO heads would be a better starting point, but would definitely add to cost.

Since exhaust work does not help these motors much, it would seem bottle neck could be heads, particularly small valve sizes. If I had heads off, would definitely have too look for cams. Also, good time for header since they would be easier to install. where does it all end once you get started? Someone needs to protect me from myself!

Don't know much about heads, but I do know that straight pipes has helped my best time by .212 off my stock best. I mean, thats all I did, take off the muffler and put pipes in.

Apparently, that also helped Lightningquick into the 12s with only a chip (Swanson?) and straights, stock tires. 12.99 I think.

On my video, the engineers said they lost 4% power in the exhaust (thought that was great) and were still able to be agressive with the exhaust note (when compared to the Focus). But I went from consistent 13.8s to consistent 13.6s with a best of 13.603@101

Swapping the heads would be impossible, if you are installing head studs, with the motor still in the truck. I have been told it is possible to pull the motor out of the top but you'll probably tear up the firewall and the rad support. So I decided to lift the cab off. This is not nearly as big a job as it sounds. Remove radiator, six body bolts, a couple wiring harnesses, steering shaft, master cylinder, rocker panel flares, push the truck under a two post hoist (two arms on each side) set a 4x4 accross the arms to lift on rocker panels. Lift body off. Push the frame out from under. Set cab on car hauling trailer on car rims. So you don't tie up your buddies shop for a week. Have your buddy put the frame on his roll off car hauler and put it in your garage. Only about 6 hours with hand tools (no air). I was a little nervous but now I wouldn't consider doing it any other way. The motor is very easy to work on with out the cab in the way.

As far a performance goes it's too early to tell since I don't have the right torque convertor in and haven't gotten a good tune on the chip yet. It is just as fast now with a few things not right as it was in perfect tune and the good convertor before the heads. 12.0's on the bottle with low 1.7's 60'. 12.7's and 12.8's no bottle. Hopeing to see another .4 to .5 drop off with a few things corrected. These runs where at The Milan Dragway and Hockey Arena. So they are probably a tenth or two slow.

Other torque convertor is going in today. Different exhaust Monday. Hopefully a dyno and chip tune next week. I will post the results then but as for right now it's too early to tell.

Sorry for the jumbo post.

BABolt, your right, not much room left to put in any bigger valves it looks like the intake and exhaust are sitting right on top of each other. Maybe Top Gun can tell us how his head are working. Thanks.
