here's a pic or two....
HEY guys i wanna black out my headlights and taillights but dont know how to do it. Iv heard of some people using a spray that comes ina can. Also has any one ever applied window tint to their headlights and taillights??????? I really want to put like some 5% window tint on my tailights but dont know if its a good idea???
as for my light's, i stuck them in the oven to separate them. if you are gonna do this i stress that you be very carefull and patient.
- you're gonna have to set the oven around 200-215deg
-put your lamp in for about 3-4min
-after 3-4 min pull it out every min or so until the lens start's to separate
-using a wde flat blade screwdriver or something similar, work yor way aound the lens untill you get a sizable bit of the lens to separate
-if you get it going and then it feel's it doesn't want to go, stick it back in for a minute
IMPORTANT NOTE: if you are doing tail's, begin separateing from the edge that has the two little clip's (the flater edge that face's the very backside of the truck) once you separate the lens you will see why (the lip on the lens on the curved portion actually slip's UNDERNEATH a lip on the housing
-after your light has been separated, try to remove as much glue as possible while it's still warm
-you won't be able to get all the glue, so heat it up a section at a time with a heat gun to remove the rest. this is very tedious so be patient. it's also important because, the more glue you remove the better a seal and finished product you will get
-then move on to tapeing of your lamp how you like
-once taped of you will have to scuff the surface to be painted (i used green scotchbrite)
-after scuffing i then wiped the area to be painted with a prepsal ("GOOF OFF" is pretty much the same stuff) or you can use a paint thinner i suppose, just test to see if whatever you use doesn't attack the plastic. this is important because by doing this it will give you a totally dirt and finger oil free surface
-then once the prepsal is dry wipe it down with a tac cloth(you can get these in the auto body section of pep boy's or auto zone)
-then paint the color of your choice (a flat or semi-gloss will look best)
-before you go and seal everything back up thoroughly clean the inside of your lens so it is crystal clear and free from streaks(i used PROTECT-ALL it's pretty much the same thing as lemon pledge)
-to seal it back up use a waterproof silicone(i used a GE black silicone from home depot)
-fill the area where the lens set's into the housing and level it off with your finger
-set the lens in place and squeeze it together and wipe off any excess
i hope i covered everything for you guy's who had questions on how to do it. i'm not saying this IS how to do it, but it's how I did it, and they came out well for me.
BE ADVISED that by doing this you will increase the likeliness of having your lenses fog up. why i do not know. but good luck
as far as tinting the lenses i think using a film would be tough altough very consistent in color. trying to acheive a 5% shade would be difficult with a spray can.
- here's a tip though if you are gonna tint the lenses and are separateing them from the housing's already, spray the tint on the inside of the lens(the same concept as painting a lexan r/c body) by doing it this way you will get better durability and a perfect gloss finish without having to apply a clear, wet sand, and buff.
again good luck fella's
