Post Does Removing The Fender Tube On THe Factory Air Box Increase Air FLow?

I was looking under the hood of my L today, and noticed how small the air tube is coming out of the fender into the factory air box. I was wondering if removing that tube would increase air flow? Would the L increase horsepower from removing this tube?

Hankfan,

I removed the tube. Folk wisdom imparted to me indicated it would help.

If THAT helped, I reasoned, why not drill a mess o' holes in my airbox to get even more air in there? So I did that, too.

Ran a 13.507 w/ the swiss-cheese airbox on Thursday, which was 1/10th sec faster than my all-time best w/ an open-mouth filter kit.

The air was cooler Thursday, so the head-to-head comparison isn't completely valid, but the ***-o-meter would indicate anything getting more air into the filter is a good thing.

OTOH, you'll be sucking in more warm air from the engine compartment.

Tests by a certain air meter company show that the BadDog "swiss cheese effect" does work. Just be certain the the holes are on the inlet side of the filter.

Cool

I left the boot on mine because it's sucking cooler outside air. I put a K&N replacement filter in and gained right at 2lbs. of boost. I then cut a large hole in the bottom of my airbox closest to the drivers side headlight (coolest air there) and gained another .5lbs. of boost. If your stock you'll have to put mufflers on preferably straight thru or this will slow you down. Proved it at the track.

Hankfan,
That was my first performance mod (cheap, easy, no cost). It gave me about 2 psi extra boost with the stock filter.

Question

I'm sure Ford will be pleased to see the new swiss cheese mod come warranty work time. What would be your plan?

Unless I go in complaining of air leaks in my airbox, I don't see what the problem would be.

Besides, my JL Ram Air gets installed next week.

I've found the warm air wasn't really a factor. I didn't go swiss on mine, so still got the option of sneaking my L back to the dealer claiming no mods if I ever had to. A butchered air box isn't exactly the impression I want them to have of how I treat my vehicles. The Pro-m doesn't seem to offend them that badly, and can be changed back to the factory airbox in no time.

Cheers

I recommend drilling a 2" hole with a fitting, attached to a hose going to cooler air. MORE POWER ! Lloyd
