bad steering problems
bad steering problems
Guys or Girls, please help me.
here is the story:
04 L, 22000 miles, when I bought it, it drover perfect, no problems. the only mod I have done to the suspension is dropped it in the rear to level it out. After that, nothing was wrong. I don't drive the truck much, maybe two or three times in a three week period. Well, drove it to DC yesterday. It drove real bad. It acted like it wanted to jump from lane to lane, every time I hit sort of a low or imperfect spot in the road, it would jerk to that direction. I could drive in the center lane fear of hitting passing traffic. It wore me out to drive it that 130 mile trip. It would not track straight at all, even on smooth roads. Something must be wrong. I read a lot about bump steer, that is what it feels like, but I haven't done anything to change the geometry of the steering. Any ideas of what could be causing my wandering all over the road? Thanks for all your help in advance

Since it sounds like you don't have a lot of suspension know-how, I recommend taking the truck somewhere and having them put it on a rack. If it's a loose tie rod end or wheel bearing or something, you do not want to keep driving it around.
BTW, it's definitely not bump steer.

I have an 01 with 100k+ miles on it. Been having a couple of issues for some time and I found this thread. I haven't tried this yet but since I drove over a curb at slow speed (no damage to the tire, rim or body) the vagueness of the steering has gotten worse.

It might be worth a look.

checked tire pressure and rotation direction, they are good. Tires have never been off the rims, just rotated from front to back. Thanks

Look under the car to see if any of the steering or suspension joints are visibly loose. This first places that I would look would be tie rod ends, ball joints, and pittman arms.
Is there any play in the steering at rest? Can you hear anything knocking when you turn the wheel from side to side when parked?

I did look today, I see no noticeable wear and have no slack in the steering, at least not that I can tell. I am leaning toward tires and a wheel alignment. I noticed on my rear tire (driver's side) that it has really excessive wear on the inside, so much that the tire is on flat, hole on the edge where the wear is, I think the tire is toast. Anyway, this tire came off the front a couple months ago during a rotation, this might be the cause, in need of wheel alignment. Like I said, hardly drive the truck on the highway. I stay on post, so drive maybe two miles to work one way. Once I get tires, will get it aligned.
On another note, priced tires for my truck: It will cost more for tires than I paid for chrome rims and tires for my mustang. That is crazy. Anyone know where I can get some tires and a good price, 1500 dollars for tires is crazy(thats tires, mouting, balance, and road hazard)
Thanks for all your help
