Question Question About The Idle Set Screw?

While switching over to my Pro-M MAF Sensor today, I decided to take a look at the throttle body to see if the butterflies open all the way.

What I found is that the butterfly plates in fact do not open to a completely flat position and could be if the idle set screw were turned in a ways. However, by doing so, the butterflies would then be pushed open at idle. The set screw is used on both ends. The head of the screw for wide open and the tip for idle. WTF.

Will I see any performance gain by shortening this screw such that the butterflies are flat at WOT? I know the answer I suppose. I guess really my question is whether the screw needs to be shortened?

Any thoughts?

I just checked some Lightning throttle bodies both stock and the modified Cobra oval bore. The rounded over end of the idle set screw is your idle set. After setting at the factory the head is snapped off to make this function tamper proof. The throttle lever and shaft when in the full open position has the throttle plate parallel to the bore. The actual stop for the throttle lever is the casting. You should not be hitting the back side of the screw. Hope this helps.

Setting out with my trusty cosmetic mirror (actually my wife's ) I discovered that, yes, BABolt you are absolutely correct.

I guess the only way to get flat throttle plates is to file away the lever arm that contacts the casting. Oh bother!

Thanks for the info.

I can sell you a modified Cobra oval bore throttle body and it will open just right and it is bigger too.
