Dumb question
In the 2000 L there is an overhead console which displays outside temp. and compass heading. The 99s don't have this.

i am not sure but I think it is external. All I know is that as much as it fluxuates mine must be broken. It sometimes jumps 15 degrees and then back again.

It is external...my wife has the same deal on her '00 Expedition. If you park the truck after running it or out in the sun, it will read WA 2 hot when you first fire it up again. I don't know where the temp sensor is, but it is definitely subject to engine heat saturation.
But, once you're moving around on the road, ours is very accurate.
