might be the exhaust hitting the bottom of the truck. Check to see if does it worse or more constantly with someone else in the passenger seat

i had the same problem with my 2000L. when i took it into the dealer, they found out the muffler baffles were bad, and there were THREE holes in the muffler (they have a drain hole in the rear of the muffler, but these were separate). i am waiting for new exhaust system now..

Question Strange high frequency rattling

Whenever I start it up in the garage and put it into reverse, I hear a loud, sustained rattling noise that persists until I release the brake and start to roll. I don't know if it goes away, or if I just can't hear it because of the ambient sounds of turning the wheel (which also makes a slight noise in the first third of wheel turn either direction) and applying acceleration, etc. Anybody have this? Is this just normal tranny noise in the L?

Is there anyone else out there that hears a noise ONLY when the selector is put into reverse? It takes a quiet garage to hear it, but it is fairly obvious and very annoying. It does not happen when put into drive.

Joel,
thanks for the great explanation. I am sure you identified precisely what it is. I must confess it is not as loud going into drive as it is reverse, but since I back out of the only place I can hear it (my garage), and usually with a cool motor, this probably explains that.
I greatly appreciate your post.

Is it an actual rattling noise or a buzzing noise. I have this noise on mine after I put my PSP air unit on. Apparently, in my case it is just the idle air valve and it goes away after about 30 seconds. Strange though.....the sound is hard to describe. Don't think it is the same problem that you are having....does it happen if you put it into drive as well?

PBGas,
it only happens when I put in reverse from park. I guess it is a combination of buzz and rattle. It's when the tranny locks up, about a half second or so after it's put in gear.

When I first saw your post I figured it was the noise that PBGas has described, but you never posted what mods have until now. So you have a Filter Kit installed (replacing the stock airbox, be it Downs or PSP). I'm 99.9% positive the noise you are describing is coming from the Idle Air Solenoid (IAS). The solenoid is the 1"diameter, 2" long shiny cylinder (with a black end that faces the front of the truck) whose axis is fore/aft of the truck, and is mounted to the passenger side of the intake to the supercharger. (If you still are undecided what the part looks like, let me know and I'll post a pic.) If it’s making the noise at start up just when you put it into gear, then it’s doing its job perfectly. The stock filter box really attenuates this noise, however the open filter lets you hear the solenoid and that lovely scream at WOT. If you want to check it for yourself, have someone help you early in the morning. Open the hood, have your assistant start the vehicle. Immediately place you hand on the solenoid (watch that loose clothing and the fan) and have that someone you trust place the truck in REVERSE with the foot firmly planted on the brake. Once the load of reverse comes into play, the IAS should be making a lot of noise at first and then taper off. When you start the engine after it is warm, the IAS still does its thing, but for a much shorter duration. It’ll do it as soon as a load is applied whether it is reverse or drive. Hope that helps.
