Question Overdrive (On or Off)

Do you normally leave the over drive off or on?

I was told by the salesman to just leave the overdrive in the on position all the time.

I noticed though that the pickup or punch of the truck happens much quicker in the off position.

Is it bad to keep switching between on and off while driving?

I usually keep my off unless I am cruising over 60 m.p.h. for long periods. But I do a lot of local around town driving,so really have no need to engade OD.
I find it a pain in the A S S having the overdrive kick in at 40 m.p.h. IMO I dont think it's bad to shift back and forth(tech guys will know), but the way I look at it, if your shifting that often it might just better to leave it off. IMO

Thanks for the reply, Spiro.

I was just concerned if it had any ill effects to the transmission if one would keep switching it back and forth when in "highway" driving".

I use the tree quite often. When slowing down from high speeds (60-65) I put it in 3rd, when 40 comes around, or so I put the shifter in 2nd, wait a second, and give the throttle a rev. It gets the engine up to speed, and doesn't throw you forward. Soemtimes, usually weekends, I go all they way down to first. It sure is intimidating with the sound.

I only turn overdrive off if im towing something or if I need it to down shift on the highway. Other than that I on so I get better MPG. That is what it is for.

I was just visiting Danny Swanson of Swanson Chips and he told me to not use overdrive unless I'm running on the highway. If I used overdrive all the time, it would eventually hurt the trans. I was also told the L's love a higher RPM.

Just reporting what I was told.

Cool

My experience is that for drag racing you want to have it OFF. If you're running 4:10 gears it will shift into OD just before the finish line, and makes a 0.15 difference in ET.

Thumbs up

Use it! Otherwise you might as well have a C6 tranny. I try to get into OD as quick as possible...hmmm, or was that, I try to go as quick as possible?

Question

Has anyone tryed to reverse the operation of the switch so that the OD only comes on when you push the button? I drive with it off most of the time and would prefer that as the "default".

Unhappy

Dave: You can't. It's hard wired in the computer to have it on when started. I asked the Superchips Distributor if it could be reversed and he basically said it's a wothless thing to do and just hit the button if I want it off. Gee, that really helps Mike. He said they "do not" do that, not "we can't do that".

Gotechs,
I drive a lot on both the highway and around town. While in town I turn it off...when on the road I leave it on. I too use it too "downshift", mainly 'cause it sounds soo cooooooool.
If you get a superchip, or probably any other chip, even when engaged, your truck will not shift into overdrive unless you go at least 48 to 49 mph. Nice touch for around the corner driving and gives you a little better fuel mileage too.
It will not hurt it to use it often.

Tim
