Any updates on the R9 Superchip program for 99's?
It's been in my truck for a week and a half and is totally awesome. Unfortunately, the Superchips factory is not as responsive (read derelicts) as the national distributor Mike Troyer. I tried for a week to get Jay Payson, the engineer who test drove my truck with me after installation, but I guess he is to effing busy to return my call. I get so pissed off when people run their business that way, in that I fall over backwards to accomodate people in my business.

Just curious on this superchip deal, as to why the chips need to be reflashed so often? I've never had to send my SHM chip in for reflash and it seems to be doing everything that's being claimed with the superchips programming.
Is this just with the '99 L's, or as you get more km's on the L, something changes as it breaks in and has to be reflashed?
Or is it that the superchip programs are prototypes, and that they have to change things every now and then as problems are discovered?
This isn't a flamer, just curious due to the amount of superchip reflashing posts over the last few weeks.
Cheers

Perhaps the difference between Superchips and others is that they are never finished. There is always room to tweak things. I had my program, and was totally pleased with it for the past 7 months or so. Recently, I belive in conjunction with developing a track only program, it was discovered that some of those enhancements could be safely added to the street program. The R9 is the latest and greatest. Having said that, the rumor mill has it that after the test drive of my truck, engineering discovered a couple of more things they could "tweak." This is Superchips only business, hence R&D never stops on chips simply because the customers are satisfied. Especially in the case of the L which is a fave of some there. I'm still pissed at them for not returning telephone calls, and putting me through their endless telephone maze. I love my chip however.

Skydive and all,
I have my Superchip on order. There was a slight misunderstanding (not serious) about the release date. I was under the impression the R9 was out of "Beta" and was in production. When my chip didn't show up, naturally I called Mike T. R9 has not yet been released as of Friday afternoon. We came to an agreement that if it is not out by noon Monday (8/28) make my chip with the CUX1TRAC "street" program in positon 1 and put that bad boy in da mail. OBTW, go the "TRAC" drag race in position 2.

I will be sending in my chip in for reflash upon the R9 release.

I'm surprised that it is considered "not done." I have the R9 on one side and the trac (or BTS2) program on the other. The R9 is a killer program, and in its final state should be incredible. Please let me know when you learn something - I am really tired of calling those clowns and not having my telephone calls returned. Reminds me of Sal!

The final R9 progam was released Friday late (8/25/00) Jay was out sick when I spoke to Mike today.
I received my chippage today, installed it after work (of course), filled up with Sunoco 94 and put a few miles on it. Holy pavement terror Batman!!
As this is my first-ever performance chip and I cannot compare it to other chips, I like it ALOT. The biggest difference I noticed immediately was of-the-line neck-snap and 40 - 42mph cruising speed (stalk mode). The tranny didn't want to "fall" into O/D then downshift to 3rd under light throttle as it did stock.
As far as acceleration...so far so good. Big ole smile on my face
Blew the wheels off a GP turbo too boot. All he saw was tailgate and shrinking letters. Nice and easy tip in and buh bye.
Shifting is improved IMMENSELY No more 1-2 gurgle, fart, etc. Under moderate throttle, it hits 2nd pretty hard (got a funny look from wife on the way home from dinner).
I'll post more results with more testing.

Thanks for the update on the R9. I'll see if I can get into the factory and get my update. To me the biggest improvement was the ability of the program to downshift to first gear at speeds of around 40. It used to be if you got a bad launch and got stuck in second, you were going to have to play catch up. Now it rockets immediately back to first. Enjoy! BTW, what program do you have on the other side of the chip - stock or another performance program?

Hello everyone. I have been on this list for about 1 month now but have not posted until now. Just a little about me, I am no stranger to Ford SVT. This is now my 3rd SVT vehicle. The others are 93 Cobra and a 96 Mystic Cobra. I still have the 96 cobra and it has some work done to it. About the chip, I just received my Superchip CUX1R9 single program chip yesterday. Well it does make a world of difference in performance and shifting. The shifting is tight from 1/4 to 3/4 throttle but at WOT the shifts are not as tight. I posted to the PSP site to get some info on the Level 10 shift kit to fix this problem. So far the truck has a 9" K&N conical filter, 2 3" 2 chamber flowmaster setup just like BRIMSTONE except the x pipe before the mufflers and the Superchip CUX1R9. The truck runs great and the boost gauge hits the black (I guess it is about 12lbs). I purchased the truck used with 3,556 miles on it and already had the exhaust changed by the dealership I purchased it from. I replaced it because they were small glass packs and were too loud and did not sound strong, just loud. I have a feeling that the 3" flowmasters flow more air because I was able to peg the boost gauge all of the time with the glass packs and now I can only do it in the morning when it is cold out. My understanding with boost is that if you open the inlet or spin the charger faster you will add boost. If you open up the exhaust you will lower the boost level but the combination will allow the engine to make more power.

Hi Skydive,
If I may, I want to try and give you some perspective with regards to getting Jay on the phone. Superchips generally keeps Jay off telephone as much as possible, and many days will not *allow* him to take calls at all, as that is not his function there. What people need to remember about Jay is that he is on the development staff, he's not a customer service rep. His sole function is program development, and that is where he has to spend the vast majority of his time, as that is his job. And him doing exactly that is how and why we're getting the fantastic programs that we've gotten from him on the Lightning, and that needs to be remembered. He can't do any of that work if he's on the phone to everyone who knows his name or who has ever talked or worked with him, and believe me, everybody and their brother who even knows how to say the word Lightning wants to talk to Jay.
He has worked on dozens and dozens of Lightnings that have come to the development facility, testing, testing, testing, and more testing, on an on-going basis, and no other firm has shown the responsiveness in exploring all possible aspects of the Lightning programs in this country than Jay has. For him to just speak to 1/4 of the Lightning owners who have made their vehicles available for testing and development, he would have to do nothing but be on the phones, literally. There just aren't enough hours in the day.
I have a couple of Lightning owners who have been waiting a month now on custom programs, and so I would prefer for him to *not* be on the phone, so we can get more customers their custom Lightning programs quicker.
You don't have to speak to Jay to get a reflash down there, anyone there can help you arrange to have that done if needs be. And of course, you can always call
me, as it's up to *us* to support our customers, not the manufacturer.
So don't go thinking that you *have* to reach Jay, as that generally just isn't going to be possible, for all the reasons I've just described and more, those are just the facts of life in dealing with development people at just about any manufacturer.
They have also been having problems with their phone service for the past few months now off and on, primarily due to various construction & other development work taking place off and on in that area, and especially in that particular office park or industrial park, whatever you want to call it. Today for example, all their phone lines are busy because of this, the phone company cannot do anything about it, nor can anyone else, the development that is allowed in Florida overall, and I used to live there, can be shocking in terms of a lack of concern for the effects on infrastructure for business. We had to deal with it too when we were down there. It was a rare day where we were that dynamnite was not being used to blast earth all day long, and talk about wreaking havoc, that will do it. Constant interruptions to phone service, electrical service, cracked houses & buildings, etc. were an on-going problem.
Superchips isn't any happier about this than we are, they know all too well the value of a reputation for excellent phone service. When this first started happening, they spent a small fortune on a brand new state of the art telephone system for the development facility in Longwood (which was just shortly after they had purchased a new system!), which made no difference in the phone service, as their system was not the problem, it's mainly what's going on in that area from time to time.
Of course, I too would always prefer to get a human being to always answer the phone, but at a busy manufacturer like Superchips, that just isn't possible all the time, so they use an automated fallback system when they cannot get a human to every incoming call, just like any other business of that stature.
It's getting more rare every day the number of companies of any real size that always have a human being to answer every single incoming call. Most use automated routing systems, to increase the load they can handle. We may have to go to that as well ourselves, though I will fight it tooth and nail, it gets down to a matter of capacity & economics, which is why this is so very prevelant in corporate America today.
Jay is rarely allowed to even return his voicemails, and you will even experience times when his message mailbox is full, and cannot accept more messages, just from all the Lightning owners who know of his name and try to talk directly to him. This is all due to Jay needing to be doing what he does. That is not his choice, he likes talking to people, but that doesn't get the work done, only him *working* on the programs and not on the phone gets the job done.
In addition, Jay has been a bit sick lately as well, he's worn out, and is working 12 hour days even on the weekend, so it's not like he isn't busting his butt to serve the needs of Lightning owners, he most certainly is, way above & beyond the call of duty. So he dosn't deserve to be compared to the likes of Sal.
He's not the only program development person down there by a long stretch, but he is doing the *Lightning* development work, and has been in charge of the Lightning development for the last 6-8 months or so, roughly, which is why we've seen the slew of new programs that we've seen, and it's all to the benefit of Lightning owners.
I hope this will give you a bit better perspective on this situation, Sandy, and I'm sorry you're feeling frustrated. Jay simply cannot speak to the number of people who try to reach him every day, not because he's rude and ignores emails, voicemails, etc., he simply has to do his job. The manufacturer's job is to develop the products, it's *our* job to support our customers, so when you need something, your best bet is to call us. Jay is doing all he can and more, none of what you've expressed is controlled by Jay, just so you'll know.
Have a great Labor Day weekend, and please feel free to give us a shout if you'd like to go over any of this in greater detail, or if we can be of assistance.
All the best,

Hi Mike:
Thanks for your perspective, and I certainly do appreciate it. One of the issues I had, was that Jay asked me to call him with my input, and my comparison between the two programs that were put into my L. I guess I get a bit frustrated, in that I don't even go take a pee when I see a voice mail message on my business line, until I have returned the call. I tried another tack yesterday with numerous attempts to reach Joel who is the one who has actually installed my chips, and got no return call. Anyway, I am totally pleased with the product, and you have always been an absolute pleasure to deal with. If you can reach a live body, I would love to have an appointment next Thursday at 9:30 AM to have the final R9 program installed. Thanks for your help.
