cool run with big block Chevy
A few nights ago I came across a 69 Biscane with the 425hp 427 and 4 speed. He complained about wheel hop problems, so we went from a 10 mph roll. I was rather suprised when he hung in there through most of my first gear. By the end of the 1/4 I only had about 3 lengths on him. I did get to check out the car. It looked stock down to the exhaust manifolds, and those classic dog dish hubcaps. Not often you see one of the old factory sleepers anymore. Just felt like sharing that one.

Lucky you,
I had to come across a '68 Chevelle SS the other day. Went from a dead stop and I never got closer than that. He just walked away. Talked to him afterwards and he said he had just changed the rearend to 350gears from 307s. He said nothing special under the hood other than the stock 396. I looked and couldn't see anything special, but who knows what he really had. Anyway it was my first loss.

You're right, you don't see them often anymore. And all those old muscle cars are neat, I think.
But, I think its funny to hear about how much faster they all were than our late-model hot-rods.
The _fact_ is that they are/were not. Sure, there were a handful of "drag pack" cars that would run very quick/fast, but your average SS big block or Boss 302/351, whatever wouldn't run better than high-13s...even if you put the good tires of today's era on them.
Good kill.

98-SVT-COBRA:
Darn, you make me want to restore my '69 BelAir 427/390 ex cop car that has been sitting in the driveway for about the last six years.
I used it as a Saturday night sleeper up in CT. in the '80s and I believe it would be a high 13 low 14 second quarter miler although I never ran it at a track.
At just around 4000lbs., it is the only vehicle I have owned that had the same sort of feel that my Lightning does when you idle off, get to about 1/2 throttle and all of a sudden the other folks at the traffic light are way behind you and you weren't even trying.
Mine has the TH400 and the same dog dish hubcaps and lots of rust. All original down to the stupid brocade blue upholstery and rubber floormats.
Nice run, but well tuned and well driven, I do think they were capable of getting pretty close to an L. And, I say that as an L owner.
