Hey Guys

Let's not forget that people have lost their lives because of a faulty tire. A simple $100 to $150 tire, if that much, have taken many loved ones. Out of respect to those families, let's not make too much light of this. I personally have lost out of my small family 2 cousins.

Lisa and Joey were taken 2 years ago next month--way before their time. God bless them.

I'm sorry about your cousins but the hell with the tires. All those people who died in Explores died because they didn't know how to drive. I've had a blowout in my wifes Mountaineer (Explorer) with the Firestone tires not the VD code but same size. As long as you know what to do, don't slam on the brake and coast to a stop everything will be fine. I've had between 5-10 blowouts in my life but I know how to drive. If you don't either learn or get out of the car. Phooey on blaming the tires!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was harsh. Oh well, glad my family is safe. As far as the spare goes, y'all better crank it down and see if there is any rubber left on the sidewall. I checked mine after 9K miles and it was pretty well worn. I had to put rubber between my tires and the frame to keep from damaging them any more. Just a warning.

Got my letter also, seems that Ford was putting firestones on some Lightnings. Just glad I was lucky enough to get mine with goodyears. Duhhhhhhhhhh. Don't know what brand of spare is. I did see it as I was installing my 1 1/4" AIM drop shackles last saturday.

Jiga,

My post was in no way meant to make light of any loss of life.

(IMHO) Ford is doing a great job of damage control to limit their liability from the SUE-Happy, money-hungry, hyper-sensitive public and lawyers. Will they take a severe loss of revenue, absolutely yet they are making quick, necessary, and the right decisions. Cover all bases so when you unfortunately end up in litigation, you have a TON of ammo.

At least it isn't another Pinto fiasco.

[Rant on] I wonder how many of these "bad" tires failed because they were neglected? I haven’t seen any numbers reported that show the numbers for people who fail to maintain their tires. People run over stuff like glass, don’t check the air pressure and they hit curbs and potholes. Those things might not cause a tire to fail immediately but take that tire out and spin it up to 80 mph on the highway and see it that little gouge you put in the sidewall when you ran into the curb last week matters. By the way, when was the last time you saw a soccer mom hauling a load of kids in and Explorer with one of the tires low on air? [Rant off]

Yea, I just got my letter yesterday regarding the firestones on my 99 ranger. its not over yet because if nhtsa decides to pull all at,atx, and wilderness tires, all these firestones will have to go. I feel somewhat sure that my tires are safe but I just don't like these tires. Truck rides like crap and it has been that way since my truck was new.also had firestones on my 95 lightning did not like them either. will not pull tires off my ranger until this whole investigation is over. just my opinion.

Hwy_2_L,

Just one tire low?, then you are seeing the good ones. I see at least 2 low in the situation you described in my travels. Not to forget the consummate life-threatening ultra-emergency discussion of Survivor on their cell phone, and/or distributing beverages to passengers whilest driving 52 in the far left lane. And WE are the A-hole for going by them on the right. I think not.

I got the letter also. Now I finally understand why I'm so slow at the track - I got the 235 width Firestone off-road option instead of the 295 Goodyear meats.

If indeed we HAD the 235 Firestones, Ford would REALLY be seeing some "catastrophic tread cap separation". I don't imagine those things would last too long on the beast.

On a related note, I got the idea (in a moment of inspiration) to bolt up the nearly-bald 225/16 Eagle GA's from the Grand Prix and melt them down, but the lugs weren't quite far enough apart. Would have looked goofy with the gold "snowflake" rims on the Lightning. The 16-inch rims on the Benzo measure up promisingly, but I don't think I'll get the wife to approve.

Ya, I got my letter also....it was worth a chuckle to me that they sent them out to us.
IMO, I agree with Jigawatt, although I believe that the owners of these vehicles do need to show more responsiblity in maintaining their vehicles and keeping ther mind on what they are doing, DRIVING, not BSing on shoe phones and the likes....

It will be interesting to see what else comes out of this whole fiasco (do you guys rember the infamous 721 fiasco?)
