What a Ride!! Long Story!!

So I am a new lightning owner and let me tell ya, I have a story to tell. I purchased a 2001 Black L with 40,000 and it is flawless. Not to mention I got a smokin deal. However, I drove 10 hours to get it, which wasn’t a big deal. My buddy brought me out there in his SLP LS1 T/A. So we were going to Gumball Rally all the way home. Well on our way home about one hour into a ten hour trip it blew a plug. Now I knew all about the 5.4 and this problem. But the dealership I bought it from gave me a 3,000 mile/3 month warranty. So I thought I would just drop it off at a Ford Dealership and deal with it in the morning. So my buddy and I went to a pub and got a little silly. The next morning I get to Ford, of course blew plug and messed up threads and they advised me to contact the warranty company. After arguing on the phone for 8 hours we have came to the conclusion that it isn’t covered because it is not an internally lubricated part. So I'm ticked. But then the ford service manager pulled me off to the side and explained that they can get me a new head and all the labor for $600 instead of the $3500. So I said do it. Three weeks later my truck was done and I drove back down there and brought it home. Luckily I got the dealership I bought it from to pay that $600 and everything was great. Does anyone know what deal they gave me? They really made my day and I was happy with the work. To be on the safe side I bought an extended warranty from Great Lakes Warranty because they were the only company that covered factory supercharged vehicle. Has anyone used this company? Finally this truck has a three way Diablo sports Delta chip with the three way light switch Three settings Red/Green/Green. Does anyone know what settings are what? I have been searching and I cant find any information on it. Sorry it is a little long, but the truck rips!!
Rock On,
Justin

I would pull the coil pacs and double check their work and make sure they are all tight now. I had them replace a motor under warranty and it spit a plug about a week later because they never tightened the plugs down, several were less than hand tight, too bad I found out after the fact….seems like they took care of you.

nice.. so they gave you the warranty as-is? even with the knowledge of computer alterations? If I were you I would read over the warranty you purchased VERY carefully, because if something else happens that could come up and bite you....

Sure you got a new head for $600, my guess is they put a helicoil in it and sent you on your way. Like the others said, better check all your plugs pronto!

And NEVER buy a 3rd party warranty

Buy from the manufaturer or NOT at all - put the money in savings and hope you dont need it - 3rd party warranties NEVER pay - the companies go out of business all the time ... Just stay away

Doug

PS like earlier post - I bet that you didnt get new head you got a $600 helicoil - BUT the part should be on the paperwork -

If you did indeed get a helicoil installed, that would be one serious rip-off.

what the hell is a helicoli?

As for extended warranty that you purchased, i dunno what other memebers opinions may be on this subject but those companies seem like MAJOR rip-offs. You can give them all the money you want but if something goes wrong you have to fight to get what you are paying for....a so called extended warranty, make sure you read the very tiny microsized fine italic cursive sometimes foriegn print they have on their contract when dealing with those companies.

I can assure you that I got a new head. It was done at the Ford Dealership. I have all the paperwork showing all the warranty parts and also it came with a one year warranty from ford on that head. As for the extended warranty, well I will let you know if I need to use it. Thanks for the info. But does anyone know about the Diablo Delta Ship?

Congrats on your L purchase! Once you regain confidence in it you'll love it! Just have the plugs checked for tightness every 15 - 20K miles and you should be fine!

As for your Delta chip...the center position will be the stock tune. The engine has to be started in that position to actually be on the stock tune. On mine the red (up) position is one custom tune and the green (down) position will be another custom tune. You can change between the two on the fly. The engine has to be started in either the red or green tune. It depends on who programmed the chip as to the degree of performance on either the red or green side. You should be able to tell the difference though.

If you access the actual chip there may be a tuners name and phone number on a decal that you can call and see if he has a record of the tunes. Hope this helps!

Yeah I found that out the hard way. I couldnt figure out why sometimes the light was one and another time it wasnt. But I eventually understood the chip. There is a big difference between the tunes. I call the last green tune the "LS1 Killer" setting. It is real nice. But if I dont turn the chip on the truck runs like K-fed's life. Thanks for the input.

Helicoil is a set of threads on a coil of wire. You use a special tool and run it down in the hole. Then break the tab off with something like a scribe. After that you got a new threaded hole. It works pretty good if you know what your doing.
