Question Powerbraking question

Being relatively new to the speed world, I really have never thought much about the mechanics of powerbraking. However, something dawned on me the other day. As I sat there in a cloud of white smoke, rear tires blazing, I wondered what the rear brakes were doing. My (horrible) logic says that they should be dragging, but my rear wheels stay pretty clean (even after going to the track), while my front wheels are always covered in dust. Can somebody please enlighten me? Thanks.

Duck,

Excellent question--are you sure you're an Aggie? I don't know if I have an answer to it either, except to say that our braking during daily driving (and the resulting weight transfer to the front--I hear it's 70-80%) must outweigh the amount of powerbraking we do. The way I see it, you must not be powerbraking enough!

Seriously, though, I don't think we're pressing that hard on the brakes during powerbraking, and the wheelspin isn't much different than coming to a stop. As for what the ABS system thinks must be going on...that's another story...

The rear brakes are dragging (applied)... but how long do you burn out for, 5 sec, maybe 10 sec max?... that's not a lot of braking. Thus no dust.

I konw you can drive around with the e-brake applied for a LONG time before it wears out.

About the brake dust, front brakes do 70-80% of the work in most all cars. If you never clean the wheels, you will eventually see dust on the rear, or you have to really beat up the L to get dust on the rears... i.e. a road race, not street driving or drag racing.
