AEM Brute force on 00'. First post

This is my first post to this site. Just wanted to thank everyone for providing so much information. I've wanted a lightning for awhile now, so I picked up a 00'. Anyway my question is about the AEM cold air kit. I installed this kit and it immediately started running rough. It bogs with any throttle and after the engine idles down it will Start to idle very low (550rpm) and rough. All the hoses and cable have been checked twice. I didnt even try to drive it like this, just in case its lean. Since this kit doesnt use the stock 80mm MAF tube, is it like I just Replaced my 80mm MAF with whatever size the AEM tube is? Therefore it may be running lean? Whats the difference between different size MAFs? Is the sensor different or is the only difference the tube that the sensor is mounted to? I ordered a 90mm Ford MAF, and I'm going to order a chip from PSP so hopefully that will take care of it. Is there any reason that AEM would say it would work on a 99-03' even if they have different size MAFs? Does it even matter what size MAF sensor you use if your not going to use the stock tube that the MAF is mounted to since the AEM tube would be the bottleneck? Sorry for the long post, I'm more of an old school musclecar guy, this computer stuff is complicated. ;-)

you can try cleaning the Maf in the mean time. And the bigger Mafs allow more air over them. But i dont know much about them, and why that would be a good thing.

Sal from PSP tunes my truck.. he is familiar with the AEM intake setup.. we did it on my truck.. the problem you are having is that your truck is originally equiped with a 80mm MAF and the 01-04 Lightnings are 90mm.. the AEM is 95mm.. so it is throwing your tune off.. heck it even did it to my truck when i had it on... but once the tune was in, it was all good.. lots of luck with your new toy and welcome to the board.. Sal will take real good care of ya!!!

So I guess it doesnt really matter what size MAF I have since I'm mounting the sensor in the AEM intake tube.?.? Was there any need for me to buy a Ford 90mm MAF? How did you mount the IAT Sensor? The grommet that AEM provided does not make for a very sturdy connection. I'm using the dreaded zip tie to keep it secure for the time being. I'll be calling psp tomorrow. I was originaly going to get the fast air, but the filters were backordered. I got anxious and bought the AEM instead. I think I'll go with the 2 way chip. I think while I'm at it I'll get the 4lb. pulley kit also. Thanks for the feedback.

I have the Fram Boost (identical as AEM makes it for fram) on my '02, it did not bother my truck one bit, but I already had a 90mm maf standard so i only ended up with 5mm extra opening or about 6%.....you have 15mm extra 19% larger opening......I have no doubt that is messing with your factory tune big time.....call up a good tuner of your choice and get a tune asap.

How did you mount the IAT sensor? The grommet that AEM provides doesnt hold the sensor in very well.

I have an 00 and had the same problem i belive the that intake is a 90mm but eather way all you need is you computer tuned for that tube. Also you can use the internals of your factory maf you don't need to order a 90mm maf, the internals are the same just the size of the case changes.

the IAT sensor is made for the stock box only really that would fit properly.. if you call Sal at PSP he has the IAT sensors that push in and stay in.. the stock ones you have to twist in and alot of people i have seen silicone them in place but its sloppy lookin.. i spent the $25 at the time for a new one.. no big deal.. but Sal i know has them.. give him a shout..

my IAT sensor stayed in just fine......and the AEM / FRAM has a 100mm outside diameter...or about a 95 mm inside diameter.....I alreay gave you guys the math......I just finished my Innovate wideband install on my truck and it is still pig rich 11.6-12.4 at WOT......so the increased size of the maf has had little affect on my A/F ratio.
