Question Slow L2. Computer prob??? HELP!

My friend has a 99 Lightning. The best it will run is 14.5 qtr/mile. I have heard on another board that there may be a problem with the computer not being programmed for high octane (premium) fuel. Is this correct?? Is this a common problem?

CPFormula,
Tell your friend I am in the same boat... 14.5 sec. quarter mile. There was no octane setting in my computer and had the tech reset it for 92 octane. There was no retard and that was correct. Went back to the strip and turned 14.5 three times in a row.... 30 minutes between runs and saw an ambient air temp. drop from 96 to 86 dgrees. No change in ET or 60' times.... 14.5 and 2.1 sec.
Have talked to Sal, PSP, and gave me a series of test to have the Ford tech tomorrow that requires WOT on the road testing. I will see if this helps and then let you know. Yep I have a lead Bolt at this time.

I remember when Sal addressed the octane setting post. He talks over my head a lot, but what I got out of his response was that the L is set at 87 octane incase you get some bad gas. That way the computer will retard the timing. He also said if you change the setting to a higher octane rating, it will not improve performance. My best time is 13.77 bone stock with a 2000 L. I ran last weekend and the best I did was 14.2. It was 72 degrees with a fairly strong headwind. Have your friend run without the spare tire or tailgate, and about 1/4 tank of gas. That is how I was when I had my best run so far. He will spin a lot at the launch, but see if his time improves much.

My L2 was slow to until i took it in to the ford dealer and found out i had 3 bad plugs and a bad coil and i still have 1 bad injector that i am still aiting for. After they fixed this, she ran better! And i lost the small vibration at around 75-82mph.
Hope this helps. Bryce

CPF,

Something that Wes suggested to me, that is worth at least trying, would be to disconnect the battery and let the computer clear itself. It's possible that the computer may have thrown some kind of code that is slowing you down.

Got the Bolt back from the dealer today. Did all the WOT test Sal had provided. Ran all the PCM diagnostics. Everything was OK, so I asked the tech what next. The service manager came up at this point and said put a chip in it and see what happens. I relied then it is not in warranty. He said chip it and if breaks we will fix it. He continued to state he had been on the phone with Ford and they were useless at offering him any reasons why the performance was down on the Bolt. The tech and manager are both avid drag racers and are definitely trying to take care of me.
So I will chip it soon and see if it runs like it should. Give you an update when it gets chipped..... in one aspect the Bolt is no where near the fastest, but it gets 17 mpg on the highway at 80 mph.
