Disappointed (sort of)
Well I got home early from Pomona. Not happy with the performance with the Swanson chip at all. Had two runs in mid 14's and just said forget it. Almost a full second worse than my best ET without a chip - basically the worst times I have ever run even compared to stock.
The truck seems to hit it's power range for maybe a second only and after that power is greatly decreased. The truck feels good on the street because I keep the WOT bursts very short these days, but I never tested it WOT for a 1/4 mile until now.
My 60' times on stock F1s were decent - 2.0's, but there was an SHM tuned L running almost a second faster than me with worse 60' times. From 60' on the truck just gets slower and slower. The shifting is fast but for some reason the power is not there. Would it be fair for me to assume that I have an incorrectly tuned chip?
At this point I don't know if I want to have Danny rework the chip or just go with a PSP chip. I know Sal has more experience with the 1999's. I am curious how many 99 L owners are using a Swanson chip?
Opinions??
Mike

Mike,
Sorry to hear your track performance was not good. I was just going to let you know I have one of Danny’s chip and am VERY happy with it.
I have had times from a 12.53 with nitrous to a 12.89, 13.13, 13.21 on just the chip and Pro-Mass Air Meter.
I would contact Danny and ask him what he thinks. Here is his new phone number since he just moved (310) 787-7800. Me personally would think there might be a problem somewhere.
Best Of Luck,
Matt

Did you watch your boost gauge during the runs?
If you go back and do a search, you'll find that there are a number of reasons for the computer to bleed off boost (especially after the 1-2 shift). Most of these problems have occurred when racing at a drag strip.
Things like doing a burnout and heating up the trans fluid to a point the computer doesn't like it, and it will shut off boost. Or, accidentally overrevving during a burnout and hitting the rev-limiter. A code is stored and the computer will many times shut off boost after the 1-2 shift under full throttle.
This has happened to me before when I didn't know what was going on.
60's were good, and 1st gear was good. Then after a good 1-2 shift the truck would fall on its face. After about the 2nd time, I looked down and saw the boost gauge reading ZERO. Ran several mid-14s, after running consistent mid, low 13s.
Disconnected the battery to clear the codes and all was well.

Wes, thanks for the great suggestion. After I installed the shift kit I was consistently hitting the rev limiter at the track so it's definitely possible that some code is now causing the boost to shut off.
After I clear the computer do you think I will be able to see if the problem still exists doing a dyno run?
Mike

Mike,
That has got to be it!
After you hit the rev-limiter a couple of times, the computer will definitely shut off boost.
With the times you were running, I'm sure this is what happened.
Some codes have to be cleared by the dealership with their computers. I was able to get my truck to run perfectly by just disconnecting the battery. I guess the code was temporary enough that this cleared it.
I doubt the problem would show up on the dyno run b/c the operator will not go WOT in 1st and 2nd.
After you clear the computer, you should be able to take it out and look/feel it. As you pointed out, there's a HUGE difference b/w a mid-14 sec run and a mid-13 sec run...especially after the 14-sec run probably starts off good and then dies after it shifts into 2nd. The ole' butt-meter can really feel this.

I don't know what kind of tires you are running at the strip (I'm running MT ET streets) but you do not have to do massive burnouts like the funny cars do to make these tires hook up. I am very careful when doing burnout to keep the revs around 3k and never going over 4k. Stay well away from the rev limiter. I am the only one of our group that has never lost boost at the track, because the other guys have all overreved and then lost boost on their run.
