Question Helmet ideas???

For those that have purchased racing helmets:

What is a good brand??

Model??

Cost??

Where to buy??

I realize this is very generic, but I am at ground zero. Do I go to the local cycle shop or is there a better place on the net. Can I get an egg shaped helmet for my head???(j/k)

Thanks in advance,

Cool

Just called around to all the cycle shops and got the cheapest one available that met the Snell ratings(about $90). Have no intention of wrecking...hopefully anyway . Some of those bad boys can run $500+.

Try simpsonracing.com. They should have a selection.

Brian,

Simpson or Bell are good choices.

Be prepared to spend $100 or more.

You can probably pick up a helmet at your local speed shop or try http://www.summitracing.com/

You can also get them at your local cycle shop but make sure they are SNELL 95 (or better) certified.

Go in person...that way you can try on different ones...and yes they do make egg shaped helmets. :-)

Very Interesting!
Arai, Simpson, Nolan, etc. all have a full range of costs, styles. Nolan has a good snell rated helmet for around $90. Any cycle shop should be a good source.

Just make sure its Snell approved. I don't know what the current rating is now. It's been a couple of years since I bought a helmet. Mine's SN 95.

You don't have to have a full-face helmet, but if its not Snell approved and the tech inspector goes by the book...you're done.

Cool

Having raced go-karts for many years on long circuits (Mid-Ohio, Grattan, Road America), I went through my share of helmets - either because an updated Snell rating was required or because I got the wrong side up. Personal preference has a lot to do with your choice (I preferred Simpsons) because no two brand names at the same size fit alike. The other variable you have to take into consideration is, depending on your form of use/racing, the eye-port size. Motorcycle helmets require a larger port for increased peripheral vision, which is especially important if road riding. Light weight helmets (carbon fiber, kevlar, etc.) with aerodynamic & airflow features can easily cost $500-$800 when looking at major brand names. Good luck!

Back in my racing days I use to say if you have a $10 head, buy a $10 helmet.

I think Simpson has the best helmets. Cost more but worth it if you ever crash.

You may want to consider the Go_Rila Flaming Helmet found in my Red-neck Racing Kit.

Here is a description from the sales brochure.

Go_Rila Flaming Racing Helmet
Everyone needs a helmet. Wear this helmet to the track and everyone will know you’re the **** (that’s a good thing). People will know your 1973 Pinto is really fast when they see you drive up in this flaming helmet. CAUTION: Do not, I repeat, do not pull out your needle point to kill some time in the staging lanes when wearing this helmet. (Matching Winston Cup scarf included for the first 10 (ten) orders).
