Has anybody has any problems with the power steering pump??

Has anybody has any problems with the power steering pump??

I have a 2001 L somewhat modded, anyway about two months ago, I started to hear a slight squealing at start up, like a loose belt, but it would go away after several minutes.

I have have been after this squeal ever since, I’m somewhat sure after crawling under the truck with a stereoscope, that the guilty culprit is the power steering pump.

It only dos it at start up, (in the morning) and then quits for the rest of the day, however lately it is lasting longer and longer on the duration of the amount of squealing it performs.

How hard is on one to replace? Where is the best place to get one?

Any Information would be deeply appreciated.

You all ride safe!! Art.

Oh yea how about a link to the “how to R/R”

Thanks!

You have to first back the ps pulley off an inch or 2 to get the upper line off. I just take whole pulley off. Youll need a ps pump puller and installer. Then let all your fluid drain from the resevoir, pull your other line off and remove pump. Reverse this installing pump with the pulley going on last.

I can hear mine whirring when I turn. It is the sound that I'm used to hearing from a pump when the steering is at full lock, only quieter.

Can anyone else hear their pump?

I can hear it at full lock only, not really otherwise...

I had an issue with the hose and the gear box on the end of the steering shaft, had them replaced once already.

My hose is leaking and mine makes alot of noise when the wheel is fully turned. Is the ps fluid suppose to look like it boiling inside the tank? My fluid really jumps around!

My understanding is the steering box or ps pump had a design change in 03/04.

The steering gear (box) was changed slightly in 03-04 to provide "better on center feel" and slightly less , VERY SLIGHTLY, turns to lock. My power steering pump was replaced after 6,000 miles, it would whir and provide very little assist below 1000 engine RPMs.

Thanks all for the quick response.

Especially the one with pulling the pulley, before removing the upper hoses (Thanks Promodlightning) that one would have driven me bananas!!

Can I use a steering wheel extractor, to remove the PS pulley??

The pump has all ways made a noise, a humming when turning the wheels. I always thought that it was way too boisterous; however this new noise is totally different.

It sounds like a bearing is ready to let go, I removed all the belts and manually turned all the pulleys, and I did not find anything binding, it was driving me nuts!!!

So I left it be, time passed and now two months latter, the sound is getting longer to fade away, I’m sure it’s the Power steering pump, the sound is generating from the pumps shaft.

I hope it’s not too difficult to change!!

Thanks All.

The power steering pump on my 01 was replaced under warranty at ~15,000 miles.

Hey quiksilver, how long has this been going on???

I have been dealing with it for the past two months.

I would leave it be, but hate the thought of breaking down in the middle of nowhere, and the middle of the night, dead drunk!!!

Plus if it freezes up (Shaft) the water pump, alternator, goes along with it…

You will be down for the count!
