Question Restraints? (not S&M related)

I could have made the title more explicit, but then I wouldn't have a teaser. I am thinking about sharing the joys of motoring with my two Labradors, but I am apprehensive about their safety. I could box them but I don't want to, it would sort of negate the purpose of the trip. I am sure that some of you haul your dog(s) around in your L. and I am curious as to what sort of tethers or restraint systems you use. Please enlighten me.

I second what Burninout101 said. It happened to a friend of mine. The same weekend after he got it painted. Funny thing was they weren't his dogs.

Forgot to add the wonders of chains on paint. Thats what he used.

Well, Moonshine, that's the point, isn't it? As long as nothing untoward happens there's no need for a restraint, is there? But what happens if you are in an accident, or have to make a panic stop, as I have had to a couple times recently? My bitch got hit by a car when she was a puppy and traffic makes her nervous. I had her tethered by her collar in the bed of my last p/u, and someone came too close and she jumped out and almost humg herself. She is older, wiser, and less nervous now, but I would never restrain her by the neck. I am going to get a couple of harnesses and 4' leads and tether them to my bike rack. I think it'll work.

I have the soft top and make my Lab stay underneath it, keeps him out of trouble, but only good for short trips....

I don't restrain mine (I know, shame on me), but I've seen dog tethers at some of the hunting shows. They are a track which runs lengthwise down the midline of the bed, and is screwed in place. A short tether is attached to the track, and the dog can move back and forth, but doesn't have enough freedom to get over the side. Looks like they'd work well with one dog, but not two. I never bought one since I've got three dogs. Trained mine not to jump up on the bed rails, so they're safe unless I was involved in a wreck.

I usually restrain my wife in the back and let the dogs ride up front.
