Question First dealer visit

I have seen the subject scattered among various posts, but I thought there must be a way to condense it into this post once and for all. I realize that dealers vary, but is there a general consensus on whether I should go ahead and leave my Superchip (or any chip) in when just getting a simple first oil change? If not, is unplugging it and replacing the computer cover all that needs to be done? Finally, what about returning the chip to its proper place (in the truck damnit, where it belongs)? Is disconnecting the battery the thing to do, or should I just go ahead and slap it back in there, even if it takes a couple of days to adjust? I would greatly appreciate any advice.

As you state, each dealer is different, but it seems like the majority of L. owners have been unhappy with how the dealerships (as a group) have treated our trucks. If all you need is an oil change I'd recommend you do it yourself, or take it anywhere but the dealership.

Only go to the dealer if they owe you something or you require warranty work. I bought my L in Nov 99 and they still haven't given me my spare key or front plate bracket. I have a 96 F150 that I bought in 98 from the same dealer and they still owe me parts on it. Sorry to vent but the dealership I went to has only provided bad experiences. Good luck.

Thumbs down

The dealers in my area are so useless, the only thing they are good for is to gouge you on the purchase. I wish I could have bought the truck from FORD directly.

In short, the product is fine, but any work/service is done by myself or a quick-lube shop.

Just for fun...

Before you take it in, mark the tires
and see if they actually rotate them.

I know one person who did it and found
the tires unrotated after his visit.

I can completely relate to the dealership complaints, (98 corvette that was destroyed by dealerships) and I appreciate your comments. I now have to go find out who's not going to wrench it into oblivion or take it for "diagnostic" rides, I guess. What fun.

hey ralleyone,

if you're just doing the oil take it to E-Z Lube. There are a couple in your area. They have Mobil 1 as well as the Mobil 1 filter.

Kobiashi,
good idea. I used to go to those guys all the time. Always brought the Merc into the dealer. What about scheduled maintenance? Will the warranty honor outside work as long as it is documented (i.e. 5k, 20k etc.)?

to the best of my knowledge, yes.

I changed my oil at 1500 using regular 5w30. Went to E-Z Lube near work. Always used to use Jiffy Lube for my Lexus but decided to take the L to E-Z Lube as they have Mobil 1. At three thousand miles I'm making the switch to Mobil 1 and will continue to use E-Z Lube. They were great, and the manager there is an L fan so they took extra good care of me. Save all your records in the event you need proof for warranty work. I keep all mine in a 3ring binder in the order anything was done.

Thankyou Kobiashi. I'm glad you've got your bolt back.
