Even the LS1 guys are starting to realize!!!!!
I was over on LS1.com today and I saw a cool topic about the Lightning's in FF&MM magazine. I thought you should all look at it. Here is the link:http://www.ls1.com/ls1forum/ls1_forum_main.htm

A friend of mine has a bone stock 1999 Lightning. We went to track to see how fast it really was. Here is how we ran at the track.
He ran a 13.76 @ 98.76 MPH on a 1.95 60 ft. 8.82 at the 1/8th mile. .6526 reaction time
I ran a 13.40 at 102.86 MPH on a 1.95 60 ft. 8.63 at the 1/8th mile. .6743 reaction time
This was done on a day when it was approx. 50 degrees (October 23, 1999) and a baromoter above 31 inches. Our cars were flying that day. As you can see, it was real close to the 1/8th mile. That is when the laws of physics took over. His truck hit a wall of air and my car cut through it. We switched vehicles and I drove it for 1 run. Its a damn beast out of the hole. It has unbelievable torque. He normally runs it at 13.9 or 14.0 when the air is not so good.
Any STOCK 5000 pound truck that can run in the the 13's is pretty impressive to me. God help us all if Ford can figure out how to put that engine in a Mustang.

I don't think there is any serious doubt about the L's abilities on LS1.com. I am a member there and most of the people I talk with understand that in the 1/8 there is serious competition for us. The 1/4 mile run is a different matter, however.

These threads are so silly. If I had an LS1, or any other allegedly high performance car, I would certainly not brag about beating a truck. If I lost to a truck I would either trade my vehicle in on a Tercel, or do whatever it takes to that puppy so that I don't lose to a truck again. It is amazing to me that we can spot these suckers so much weight and aerodynamics and still give them a run for their money. And if one of them does beat me I challenge him to run me again, only this time we'll both have a 5000 lb. boat in tow, lol.

Not to be meant as a flame but you are talking like the Lightning is your standard run of the mill truck. If I got beaten by a regular pickup, I would hide from the world and buy a Geo Metro or something. Let's not forget that the L is SUPERCHARGED!!! And look at the HP and Torque numbers. I don't care if the vechicle I am racing is a dumptruck, If the power to weight ratio is there it would be considered high performance. The abilities are what matters, not the fact that it is a truck.

I also believe that it is quite a feat to make a truck this heavy run with much lighter cars! I still respect the LS1 guys that believe that our trucks can run, not the guys who say "If it says Ford" it is slow without seeing one in action. I am planning on buying the wife a 2001 or 2 WS-6 T/A

As I've said before (and this is nothing profound), "there is always someone faster". Doesn't matter what you drive, although the ratio of those who are faster go down considerably as you get _real_ fast, at least for street-driven vehicles.
Yes, the L is a very fast truck. I'm very pleased with mine, and the few mods I've done to it make it perform well enough to holds its own. It is a great 1/8 mile brawler b/c it has so much TQ, is geared very well for 1/8 mile, and has much better traction capabilities than anyone would figure for a truck.
The key is that we all enjoy whatever we've chosen to purchase and drive. What gets me are the people who think they have to talk trash in order to build up their own egos. If you're secure enough, you don't have to win every race, and if you DO win...you don't have to be a complete jerk about it.
My brother has a '99 Ram-Air T/A. With minimal mods it makes over 340rwhp (corrected). Runs 109mph through the traps. With a 6-speed on stock tires, it doesn't ET that well, but just bolt some drag radials on it and it would run mid-12s.

i don't agree with the statemen'ts made in this thread about the L only beating Ls1 cars in the 8th mile. just got back from u.s.131 dragway [first time there] and i couldn't get any w6 or ss or z28 to race me and the reason is there best times between all seven of them was 13.586 and my times were consistent13.507 and 13.565 ect the weather was bad 85 degrees and 90% humidity ihave raced four ls1 cars at three different tracks now and beat them all and a c5 on the street.tonight the very last race i raced a c5 he red lighted.279 to my .592 and i still beat him with my worst time of the night my 13.639 to his13.692 so don't try and b. s. any one about the L not being a threat to LS1,S because it just won't fly. i also raced an r/t L 13.506 R/T 15.272. later
