Question Crackling Sound at WOT

Just installed a chip and was wondering if any of you guys know what the cause is for the "crackling" sound I hear at WOT.

Not sure how to really describe it but it sounds like something "crunching"

GOTECHS,

Hmmmm not a good sound. Does it sound like marbles rattling around??

If so, sounds like you engine is running on the lean side and it is detonating.

Which chip is it??

Be Careful!

GOTECHS,
FSUFAN is correct. Your truck is experiencing detonation(pinging). You'll have to send your chip back to Sal and let him pull some timing out of it. I'm going through the exact same thing right now.

92 octane, sounds like Texaco. My (PSP) truck is almost undrivable with Texaco due to pinging. Try Exxon supreme, it seems to do the job for me. I know its not supposed to be the best gas, but I only have slight pinging every now and then when I used it, depending on where I buy it at. Also, try running a can of NOS octane booster "racing formula" through one tank and see what happens.

Did you every stop and wonder why your truck is audiably pinning?

I'm in California

Been using Shell Supreme Unleaded at 92Octane

Afraid to use the Octane Booster as I was using this before on my Syclone and I think it may contributed to it's demise.

I too have the pinging going on, especially noticeable when I first really goose it. Crackle, crakle, crackle. Unfortunately, I have a tank of 91 octane in the L. I just put in a full bottle of 104 Octane Boost - racing formula. Supposed to raise the octane 5 to 7 points.

After a couple of short drives, the ping is still around. How long should it take to mix with the gas and get to the engine? Should I wait or pull the chip until I get a tank of 94 octane or just drive carefully?

Please help!

I run Mobil Supreme (92 octane, California...) with no pinging whatsoever (Stock 2000 L).

GOTECHS: Use Chevron... it's better Gas (IMO)... but if you have knocking with Shell, you'll mostly likely still have it with Chevron.

Pseudonym: There is a lot of discussion on octane boosters on this board... you can search for it... But it shouldn't take too long to mix the octane booster with the gas... However, depending on how bad the knocking is... you'll need to add more. I have to run 3 bottles before it makes a difference (my other car has an aftermarketing knock sensor, with display).

My chip was pinging slightly at about 2grand but it evens out past that and the truck shifts hard and I love it. I currently have Wheels' chip in my truck. It is pinging less than mine was but still just a little. I put some octane boost in it and I think next weekend I am going to run up to the track and get a few gallons of high octane fuel. The worst though...when I was having trouble *still am as a matter of fact* with my gas gauge and I took it in they ran almost all of the gas out of it and some of you may have read the post and remember how mad I was, so I told them that I was expecting a full tank of gas in both the Lightning and the truck the loaned me. I should have cut my losses...they filled my L with 20 gallons of 85 octane. Talk about detonation. I was HELLA MAD.
