Question Question about our SVT rims - Powder coated or painted

Hey all,

I am in the process of getting my rims powder coated the color of my truck (black). Yes, I can post the pics when they are done.

I have a question about our existing finish. Are the factory rims painted or powder coated silver? I have had several shops tell me they are probably powder coated from the factory and they can coat right over the existing finish with out sandblasting if that is the case. Does anybody know for sure if Ford paints or powder coats the rims?

Thanks...Alex

i think there is a plastic clear coat that has to be removed. POST PICS!!, i've been thinking about blacking out the whole truck.

They are powder coated and it is one tuff surface. If someone tells you that they can powder coat over an old surface without removing it or at least doing some type of surface preparation you better get it in writing. I have seen what happens when you powder coat over an old powder coated surface and I also have photos of the powder coat as it came off in sheets. Additionally, in another thread I show photos of my glass beaded wheels that I wanted to powder coat. I also have photos of black powder coated Cobra wheels.

PS. The Cobra wheels were glass beaded before they were powder coated.
Just an update they may in fact be painted but it is still one tough paint.

I recommend beading the wheels right down to clean metal before applying new powder. Too much can go wrong when working with powder over surfaces already coated with products of unknown ability to anchor powder.

1BADFRD,
I am in the process of getting my wheels powdercoated white. You MUST get the existing finish off of there if you are getting it powdercoated. The stripping place i used charged me 75$ a wheel for stripping.Evidently aluminum is a pain to strip. You dont want the metal to be pitted. The center caps were painted at an auto body shop for 80$ total.Powdercoating is costing 40$ a wheel so it is pretty cheap.
Powdercoating is real tough stuff and why i decided to go that route. When they strip the original finish off youll notice all the major inperfections in the cast from the factory. They knew it was going to be a painted whell so i geuss they didnt care to much how the cast turned out.
Well i hope this helps you out a little.Sorry for rambling....

I agree with all that has been suggested. I too would rather be safe then sorry. I will get them stripped with the bead blasting.

By the way, SVT says the rims are painted, not powder coated, you figure they actually know anything?

Thanks guys....
