reply from another thread with the same question:

This new design is on every single Lightning kit that has been produced by Whipple since it has been offered to the public. I'm not sure on the specifics of the two different designs, maybe someone from Whipple can come here and comment.

Recently there has been alot of discusson on if the Whipple can produce ET's/MPH's that are up to par with the KB units that are available and I think this trucks performance with the 2.3 is showing that it can compete, even at its smaller advertised displacement.

I cant emphasize enough that there is more in this truck and when the weather cools off and there is more track time with this combination, I wouldnt be suprised to see 10 teens or 10.0's with ease.

Thanks everyone, I do appreciate all the congrats.

The older Whipple blowers, like from the "works" era, were slightly different in design. The delay on the Whipple Lightning kit was mainly because of the redesign in the current Whipple blowers. All the Lightning kits sold by Whipple (not Works) are the newer design.

I ran the older design on my truck, and went 10.59 all blower, on a soft tune breaking in the new motor (12 degrees, mid 10s a/f). Also, being involved with most of the Works 140 trucks, I know the power that the older Whipple was capable of. I was curious to see if the new Whipple would live up to the older unit's performance. When I tuned a truck in person with one of the new blowers and it made 640rwhp and no boost drop off at higher rpms, I knew the newer design also worked well.

If you are referring to my truck, I was running a 6lb lower with a 2.5 upper, and making 26psi with lots of belt slip and no boost drop off.

Ahhh, sorry. I think it was an 8lb lower and a 3" upper. Might have been a 3.25" upper. I don't recall.

Let me help you out.

Vinny's Whipple (not the Works) had 3/4 rotor teeth and used lysholm rotors.

New Whipples have 3/5 rotor teeth and the rotors aren't lysholm rotors.

Big difference.

KB's have 4/6 rotor teeth.

Sorry, but that's not correct.

What's the answer then? You can't say that isn't correct and not provide an answer. I physical counted the rotor teeth on the new and old ones. Even marked them with a marker so I wouldn't count any rotors twice by mistake. That is also the answer straight out of Art Whipple's mouth. Not being a wiseazz, just curious now. If need be as to not hijack this thread, make a new one about it. Thanks!
