Lightbulb V1 Console Mount

Well it's raining today so I decided to make a console mount for my V1. I can still take it down when needed and I don't have to mess with the suctions cups any more. Plus it's back from the windshield and a little more stealth looking.

All it took to do this was a V1 visor mount, (1)- 1 1/4" #8 sheet metal screw and a drill. I did have to cut about 1" off the tail of the clip in the mount. Take the existing screw out of the front of the console and replace with the 1 1/4" to get the correct lenght. You will have to work the bend in the clip so it is tight and doesn't let the back of the V1 bounce around. Sorry if the pics are a little dark. Had to take some in the garage to get out of the rain.

Great idea, It looks like a black circle near the winshield what is that ??

I use the Visor clip right next to the console by reversing it and sliding the clip up into the headliner, that way I can slide it out when I park.

Been looking for a even better mount idea

Doug - In the 3rd pic? That't the wiring to the V1. I need to tuck it in a little more. There is a little more slack than I need now that the V1 is not on the windshield.

Thumbs up

Nice clean install, Hwy. If I had an overhead console, I'd probably do the same. Anybody with a '99 have any good ideas like this?

BTW, I just sent my Val-1 back to the factory for a full upgrade/update. I bought my unit about 6 years ago and want to take advantage of the improvements since then. (Longer X-band range; much longer Ka-band range; fewer Ka falses; mode memory; visual ID of radar band) Valentine is the only detector company I'm aware of that offers to do this. Costs $255.50 including shipping and they throw in a one-year warranty. Basicly, you get a brand new detector for $150 less than the cost of a new one.

Just got my V1 back from having the updates done. Sent it out and got it back in a week. Great service. Mine is about 3 years old.

Question

I've got the Solo cordless. I've heard that the few inches of window tinting near the top of the windshield can impede the detection of any radar detector. From your pics, it looks like your detector is pointed into the tinting.

BadBolt - I know what you mean about the tint at the top, I was worried about that. From the angle of these pictures it does look like it is right in the tint but it actually sits just below the tint and just above the mirror. I drove past one of our local speed traps late Saturday and it seems like it picked it up like it always has. If they are shooting from overhead (overpass or something like that) it might be a concern but most of the time they are on the same level as you are so it should have a clear line of site to the radar gun. If I notice any reduction in how it works I'll be sure to post.

I don't think most "normal" windshield tinting (the factory installed dark shaded band across the top) will have any detrimental effect on the performance of the Val-1. I've used mine in that position in my Syclone, SHO and Lightning and it's always worked great.

Two types of windshield tinting that will affect it, however, are the ones coated with a reflective metallic film (reflects the radar signal instead of letting it pass through to the detector) and anything like Ford's built-in InstaClear windshield deicer system. Some aftermarket sun-blocking films may also reduce detector effectiveness.

Cool

I would think that the tint would affect lazer detection more. Something you might want to consider.

Chris - You are right about the tint affecting the Laser part. Even under ideal conditions Laser is hard to detect. If you are in a crowd and they hit the guy in front of you first you might get a warning. If you're by yourself you are toast. Lucky for me they don't seem to be running Laser too much where I live.
