Post Window Cleaning

As an obsessive detailer, I've been struggling mightily over the past week to get the windows of my Lightning ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESSLY clean, inside and out. I've tried every product available at the local Pep Boys, with no luck at all. The more I cleaned, the nastier and streakier they got. Thank God I didn't screw up the tint with some ammonia-based crap or something like that.

Anyway, I finally listened to my co-pilot (wife) and took a dish soap (Dawn, I think) soaked washcloth to the windows. It applied a heavy layer of clingy, soapy foam to the window, which toweled off magnificently with no rinsing or other fooling around. Two applications left the glass ABSOLUTELY spotless inside and out. Am I the only idiot out here who wasn't aware of this? Nothing short of miraculous results.

Silver: One other thing you might want to try, is after you've got them spotless, take an eraser (like the kind for a chalkboard) and give your windows a good rub down. The eraser almost does a "polish" job.... and can get a shine out of them that is almost unbelievable.

When I got my L's windows tinted the guy told me to use PLEDGE to clean the windows on the inside. Because it wont hurt the tint. I don't know if it will work on the outside or not.

Believe it or not, using wadded-up newspaper to finish the window cleaning process will remove any streaking.

Later,

The Dawn sounds like a good idea. I'll give it a try.

A commercially available glass cleaner that also works very well is Zep Glass Heavy Duty Foaming Cleaner. It comes in an airasol can and does a great job. Don't use it, however, on aftermarket plastic tint film. On that stuff I use Zep Vinal Window Cleaner and it too does a great job.

Another item I picked up this weekend that works very well is a California Water Blade. This squeegie-like thingy costs $20 but really does a good job. It's made by the California Duster people. Has a large t-bar shaped soft silicone blade that conforms to the shape of the surface. It cut my drying time after a wash by at least 50%. Very soft; won't mar or scratch the surface. Squeegies away ALL the water! You don't need anything else.

Mike

Everything at Pep Boys for windows sucks. I got a spray foam window cleaner at ACE Hardware and when used with a clean cloth leaves no residue. It also takes off the white shoe polish from the Strip quite well.
