Angry No Guts No Glory

Disclaimer, I'm sorry if I offend anyone on this board, and I will say that I'm sorry rite now. I am tired of reading posts of poeple how are SAYING that they have done the 3 digit speeds, how would you like to actually do them I'm sure that Nathan Fly by was fun but wouldn't it be more of a challange to ACTUALLY do that! The Lightning PU was also built to go FAST for more than a quarter mile so I'm asking for a few Lightning owners who have the GUTS to go at 3 Digit speeds for more than 2 secs! The SilverState is sold out but the week before is the Pony Express ,and I know some of you will show up!!!

The Silver State Challenge is sold out already?! DAMN! I have the registration form at home... just didn't get around to mailing it in.

Where can we get info on the Pony Express?

Also, who on this board has put their 'L on a track... and I mean one with turns... a road course (Sears Point, Laguna Seca, etc.)

I would love to run in something like the Silver State Classic, but when Danny finishes with my truck I feel certain that it will easily top 150 m.p.h., which would put me in the Grand Sport class, and although I might be willing to put in 5 point belts, a roll bar is out of the question.

alphadoggy,

Ok..... what is Danny doing to your 'L? Not fair that you live somewhat near his shop. I'm trying to convince him to move to Texas so I can have my cake and eat it to.

Thumbs up

My day is not complete unless I have run over 120 m.p.h.. I'm fortunate enough to have roads near my home to run those speeds for a few miles, at least 3 times a day

Cool

Nothing but his chip and ProM. That's all he has on his 2K, and he's dynoing 378 r.w.h.p. I figure with my JBAs and his dynotuning I should be over 380. The secret is the 4.10s, which should move the power curve to where I can utilize it. If a stock L. can do 140, as far from peak r.p.m. that is, getting over 150 should be a breeze.

Ruslow:

I gather that your original post is some sort of backhanded invitation to participate in the Pony Express directed at the members of this board. Next time, try asking nicely and you might enjoy better results. Running your posts through a spell checker may also improve things a little. Too bad those things don't also work for punctuation.

As far a triple-digit-plus speeds go, what Lightning owner doesn't break "the ton" with regularity? I can't imagine driving this beast around and not "exercising it properly". I know I'm not the only (reasonably) well-paid professional out there risking his ***, license, and livelihood for the sake of screaming, high-horsepower blasts at felonious speeds on public highways. Am I the only (overly-sensitive) fool on this board who took the original post as a hard shot to the gonads?

Anyhow, I can recall within the last week two such incidents, both within the confines of what we refer to as the "greater Cincinnati metropolitan area". For the first, I was headed out to a company picnic of sorts in the quiet hamlet of Blanchester, Ohio. I had the (conservative, go-slow) wife in the co-pilot's perch operating the video camera. We managed 125 mph on a fairly busy Route 28 on a slight uphill grade. This basically started as a passing move on an Explorer full of yuppies, with a extended WOT run subsequent to the pass.

The second blast went down yesterday on the way to another work-related picnic. The setting was Route 52, not far from Coney Island amusement park, which I can tell you is not the lowest-risk site for speeding on July 4. Anyhow, my buddy got a good slingshot-style run on me from behind in his NASCAR edition F150 (4.6 liter Triton). This necessitated heavy, prolonged application of the "loud pedal" and the associated counter-clockwise rotation of the boost gauge. Again, an agitated wife was to my right, and I was forced to end the party at 110 mph around a gentle left-hander after blasting past a rusty S-10 and giving my buddy a look at the Lightning's taillights at long range.

If any of you fellow enthusiasts find these tales "not representative of the ownership experience" or even "offensive", you might want to consider a trade-in.

Cool

ALL Righty then.....

As I am perplexed as to the nature of the inquiry in which we "L" owners meet and/or exceed the fabled "Dollar Bill" mark.

As I do not share the feeling so eloquently described above of having my gonads submitted to intense displeasure, I have, on occasion with location chosen as to minimize the potential damage to me, said vehicle, and other Non-L's, stomped the loud pedal and blown the carbon out, literally. If I'm not able to "risk it all" for over two minutes, it doesn't count in my book. Proof of these exercises can be witnessed in one or more of the following checklist items:

1. Looky-see post-run inspection of the regularly cleaned exhaust pipes,

2. Ghost-like hue of a passengers face,

3, ***** eatin grin etched on mine.

To summarize, of course I drive it past 100, albeit seldom, don't you?

This is a way to finance tickets, upgrades, etc. For everytime I exceed 100, I put away 10% of the top speed achieved in "escrow" for future modifications and/or local constabulary "dues." Not only does it keep me in budget, minding my P's and Q's, it is a gift that provides a return.

Best regards,

Regular offender with the tickets to prove it. :-)

I am certainly interested in the open road races but unfortunately, my medical expenses preclude it this year. Catch me next year ruslow, and things will be different.

For those who want to tangle with Ruslow, I have this word of caution:

I was wondering if anyone remebered that item thats in my truck.I'm not hear to say or bad mouth you people for going over the century mark ,I'm just saying think about what your doing and how your doing it,ie.do you have your seat belt on?,who tighten your lug nuts?,when was the last time that you cked your tire pressure[remember that glass that you ran over].Just remember that when your giving the ride of their life to your loved one! What I'm trying to do is let people know that there is a safe place to do this type of thing [and it documented]this type of event is not for everyone but is open to anyone that wants to try.And I hope to see you at one and not on the freeway because you had a tire go down and lost it at 120.thanks Stan

Ruslow:

Well put indeed, and hopefully well-taken by all who read this thread. I'll answer your questions with regards to seat belts, lug nuts, tire integrity and pressure. The person who checks/adjusts those (and a lot of things that you didn't mention) is none other than MYSELF, with regularity and thoroughness not always understood by the spousal unit, neighbors, and others. These items are not left to any of the local "butchers" (that's "mechanics", for those not in the know) or anybody else, for that matter.

This "attention to detail" has been carried over from my high-performance motorcycling days, where I learned all-too-well what a loose bolt or punctured tire can do to one's skeletal structure at speed ("temporarily wreck it", to spare you the suspense).

I hope all of us take the "lightning driving experience" this seriously, but I know this isn't the case. And let's not even think about those who get behind the wheel of one of these beasts with beer in their belly.

If the above post expresses, in a different manner, the point you were originally trying to make, then I'm a tiny bit (just a tiny bit) sorry for the semi-flame. I suppose it was just your "tone" (as my wife likes to say) that rubbed me.

Rus,

Being a retentive individual by default, owning a Lightning only fuels the fire, so to speak.

I do need to claify a quote made earlier. "Risking it all" for me does not entail the disregard of basic safety (ie: lug nut, tire pressure, and weekly tread inspection, seat belts, etc.) Yes, i get funny looks from my neighbors, used to it. I withdraw my question referencing if you exceed the century mark.

Excellent rollbar by the way!! What did it cost and do you have pictures of the floor attachment points? If so, please email them to me at speedinbob@home.com I have yet to carry three people in my truck and I think the Mrs. might let me install one if the price is reasonable and I dont have to carve up the plastic too much. 5 point harness would give the warm and fuzzy at speed as well.

Peace

For those of you wondering .I run the 93 Lightning at the closed course events because the handling is far superior to the Gen 2 ones. The 99 is used for the open road events because of the aero properties of them.Just listen to Nathan Fly By you hear the blower whine but you DON'T hear the wind rush. And I figure that he's running near 130 to 135.The roll bar thats in both my trucks I build them,I'm going to sell the one in the 99 because I need to up size for the faster class[I feel safer, don't have to, rules say 1.75 dia. is fine] but I will be safer with the 2 in. one.If anyone is interested e mail me ,I did not post this topic for that reason.I posted to try and get interest in open road events and to THINK before you do the triple digit speeds.
The 99 has been clocked at 147mph and the 93 at 138 mph.And by the way the 99 was stock except for the safty items for the 150 class. But its not NOW!!!!! Stan
