Post Towing with a chipped Lightning?

Has anyone towed a trailer weighing about 4500 pounds with their Lightning and a performance chip? I am wondering if it would work better to take the chip out for the towing or leave it in. Thanks for any response. Mike

If it was me I would leave the chip in, at least for the sake of the tranny, or just go with a shif-kit which will provide the proper shifts for towing, not those long sloppy shifts which only create more heat. And also I would upgrade to a high capacity transmission pan as well. So, I guess you could pull the chip, if you have a shift-kit.Hope this helps

Hey thanks Mike. I know I could call you and get instant advice but I hate to bother you so much. I have the superchip trac program so dont have the capability to switch to the stock position without pulling the chip which I will do if there is detonation. By the way I really like the new chip! Thanks guys for the advice.

Since I throw my two sense in everywhere.

If your chip runs alot of Spark or leans it out you will likely (not always) have problems. You can have problems with chip that has a moderate combo of both.
Also the weight, altitude, temp, humidity will have a big impact on if you have Knock.

If I had a choice I would tow with the stock program with some trans tuning and maybe a small amount of spark advance. I would like it running Fat (lott o' fuel) like stock.

I feel I could safely tow with my current Chip (Inject Tech). And from what I have seen of Superchips standard performance program you would likely not have a problem.

Hi Bad Pit,

You shouldn't have any problem towing with your chip. I would go ahead and give it a try, and if you start hearing "pinging" (spark knock, detonation), you can always stop and pull it very quickly. If it's our Superchip, you can simply flip it over to Position 1, which on most of our chips is the stock factory program.

Feel free to give us a call if you want to go over this in more detail,

Wasn't Sal working on an improved tranny radiator for the L? Whatever happened to that project?
