Post L owners in So. Cal.--A must read

If you have been hearing a strange flutter/rattle sound in the engine compartment and have taken your L to a dealership and they have found the cause let us know.

I have taken mine to a few dealers with no luck. Today I went to Joe MacPherson Ford, took the engine tech for a ride. He heard the noise and did not know what it was. He thought that it might be the pistons because the new pistons no longer have a shirt. If this is what is causing the noise than Ford has said there will be no harm to the engine.

We both sat down and called Ford and the first thing Ford asked was "does he have a chip?" I said no because the flutter/rattle sound was there before the chip.

Ford asked the tech to get the engine number to find out the build date and they would look into it.

I'm to call MacPherson Ford back in a couple days to find out what Ford has said.

In the mean time, have any of you that have the noise, discovered what it was and which dealership did you take it to??

FORDSALES- I bought my Black 2K in San Diego and also have a diesel sound when the motor is Cold. I first notice it around 300 miles. The engine value cover has the following.

9G250AA
001096399
461 04-18-00 54L

It has to be a cool day for me to hear the sound at start-up from outside. But with these warmer days and nights here you can still hear the noise (Diesel sound) but only from under the truck. I have not taken it into the dealership for troubleshooting because its warmer. And I want the sound to realy show up loud! So when they say "what noise" they have to yell!

Your start-up-cold sound is not what the above threads have been about. The noise being discussed is there all the time when running the RPMs into the 3000-3500 range.

You might want to do a search regarding "piston slap"

With piston slap, the L owners have noted that the noise was at a cold-start-up.
