Thumbs up PSP 4-way chip

I have had the chance in the past week to install Sal's new 4-way chip, and I must say this is something the Drag boys could really benefit from. I personally like to have the choice of switching from a few different programs while also being able to retain my stock settings.I now have a stock setting, street setting, and 2 programs that require octane booster only, no race fuel. I could not be any happier. The only problem that I am now having is when I have the PSP performance setting on along with the Level 10 shift-kit, the tires just love to break loose during shifts.I am so glad I decided to do the Level 10 shift-kit.It just feels like this is what the tranny relly needed. I'm not saying it's any faster, but damn, It sure is alot quicker.

Hey Spiro,

Was the Level 10 kit hard to install? Did you get it from Sal? And lastly, does it make the truck shift too hard a partial throttle? I would like for the transmission to vary its shift hardness according to the throttle position. WOT would let it slam into gear but 1/4 to 1/2 throttle would be much less firmer but not slushy like stock. Let me know what you think.

Thanks,

Collin

Hey Collin,The shift kit was real easy to install, it honestly took me 30min to do. But luckily I have my own mechanics pit in my garage, which does save alot of time.I did purchase it from Power surge Performance. The shifts are a little firm on part throttle,Anything above 1/2 throttle is nice and firm. I personally love the way it shifts, especially 2nd

Collin,

Whether you go Level 10 or TransGo, I'd highly recommend it like Spiro says. I will honestly admit that the part-throttle shifts (when coupled with Sal's chip) will be on the firm side of things. It's not _totally_ obnoxious, but you know its there.

However, the benefits are great. I have the TransGo kit and it was simple to install, and I do not have a pit in my garage. And while I have a lot of tools, you don't need many at all to install something like this.

With the shift kit and the Superchip, the truck shifted very good, and would lay a small scratch on the 1-2 shift. With Sal's chip, the thing barks them HARD on 1-2...I haven't stopped to go measure the rubber laid, but its a real scratch. 2-3 I can barely hear the tire squeal, but again the shift is outstanding.

As Spiro said...it will definitely make the truck quicker.

I have yet to run my truck since installing the shift kit, and just got Sal's chip (single program) one week ago. But, in good air on a good track, I'll be suprised if I'm not in the 13.0x w/ just a PSP chip, PSP inlet tube kit, and a TransGo shift kit.

I can't believe that I waited this long to try out the shift-kit, I read all the great responses from Wes and Jigawatt, and yet waited too long. But now,I have awesome shifting. I look forward to possibly hitting the 12's on Saturday, that is if I finish the gears today. Not sure if the 3.73's will help, I can't see how they would hurt.

Are there any outside modifications done? Or is it all internal? I am curious because I bought the maintenance care package to be certain if something breaks down, and it has to do with a tune-up, they can't point the finger at me.

Spiro,

If you've got ET Streets or slicks, the 3.73s will help tremendously. You will certainly be boiling the F1s on the 1-2 shift once you get those gears installed. In fact, it might be interesting to know if you boil them _too_ hard. That can be an issue...just like a high HP stick car that just sits and spins on the shifts...not really a good thing.

But, with sticky tires that won't be an issue and you'll certainly improve your ETs.

I'm reluctant to hit the track down here (time is scarce) b/c the air varies so much from early spring/late-fall conditions to mid-summer, that I might get discouraged with my times vs. what I've accomplished when the air and track are perfect.

But, I've run with several 12.8 cars on the highway at speed. They just barely start pulling over 100mph, which is about when the 1/4 mile is done anyway (at least in my truck). Off the line and through the 1-2 and 2-3 shift, these trucks are hard to beat.

I bet your 1/8 mile (with traction) will be incredible.

Good luck!

Tundra,

As far as external mods to the trans...there are none. If you're talking about the PSP chip, then you'd just need to remove it (which takes 5 mins. tops, including disconnecting the battery) before you go in for service.

However, if they pull the info from the computer regarding the trans, then they will see that it has been shifting "incorrectly", and if they open it up and drop the accumulator valve body, then they'll find you've modified it.

Honestly, I'm not worried about it, but then again, I might have a bigger budget than some. However, the improved shifting is well worth it. I'd get a shift kit before a chip, if I had to do it over again...although the combination is VERY tough! And, of course, the chip is what will extract the extra power from the motor.

Thanks for the encouraging words Wes. I was lucky enough a few months back to track down the last set of ET Drag's from Wells performance in FL. I run consistent 1.86-1.89 60' my best 60' so far has been at the World Ford Challenge with a 1.84. Now with the addition of the 3.73's and the 26"tires, I think the ratio works out to a 4.09. We'll see what happens..

Question

Wes - where did you get your TransGo shift kit from and how long did it take you to install? I'm assuming I will need to get some fluid. What type did you use?

Thanks - David

P.S. BTW - we had a precious baby girl on 04/27/00. I've noticed some changes in my perspective.
