Anyone Using Flowmaster 40 Series?
Hello to everyone,
I'm brand new to this forum and just purchased a Lightning a short time ago.
I am thinking about doing an exhaust muffler change and have had several friends recommend the Flowmaster 40 series.
Could anyone let me know how they work on the Lightning. Just going to cut the stock muffler out, and install 2 Flowmaster 40's.
Thanks for any input.

That's exactly what I plan on doing. I've used the 40 series in other trucks and you can't beat the sound, especially of-idle. I was quoted $170 at a local muffler shop.

I put dual 40 series Flowmasters on my 00 L and did not like them at all. They were way to quiet. Currently I have dual one chamber flowmasters on my L and love them. I know most people think that the one chambers are way to lound but they really aren't. They have a really deep tone and do not resonate in the cab like most people think. Now don't get me wrong you can surely hear them but it is not to the point to were they are annoying. HANKFAN
I noticed some loss of low end torque on the 40 series as well as the one chambers but you really could tell a difference once you got above 3,000 rpm. My truck seems to pull harder at higher rpm's than it did before. I guess that is the trade off to have a good sounding truck. HANKFAN
Hankfan: I wonder if you got the 40's with "Delta Flow"? According to Flowmaster website the regular 40's are the loudest they make.

I had the 40 series ( no delta flow) flowmasters on my L orginally. I currently have dual one chamber ( Part # 9430109). These are 3 inch inlet and 3 inch outlet mufflers. This is the key to getting the deep aggressive tone out of the new L's. If you put 2 1/2 inlet and outlet one chambers on the new L's you will sound like you have no mufflers at all (My friend has already been down that road). The reason why the
3 inch inlet and outlet mufflers sound so much better is because they have a bigger case which really helps deepen the sound of the new L's. I am not sure what series the one chamber mufflers are but when I spoke with Flowmaster they stated that the one chamber race muffler was the loudest muffler they make. HANKFAN

If it helps any, I am running w/out a mufler and plan to put 'straight pipes' out the side as soon as I get my paycheck. Its very loud, but not unbearable. I may have lost a little low end torque, but that may be a good thing, considering traction and everything.
I'm running the 40 series 2 chamber flows. 3" in 3" out. With long tube headers and no cats. They are LOUD. I imagine the factory exhaust manifolds and cats would quit them down alot.

An x pipe would help. A h pipe would probably help less. It would be difficult to x pipe it since the trans is in the way and the whole system is pretty short to begin with. I think I'll end up putting 3 chambers on it and be done with it.
As far as cops go I just try to keep my foot out of it when they are around. I've had them do a double take. I don't think they believe a newer truck could be making all that noise.

i was running two 70 series mufflers and no cats with jba headers.lost a little low end but top end was great.20 years ago they would have sounded great, too loud now.put the cats back on ,lost great top end and got back the low end.the wife is happy, sounds great, but could stand to be a little louder.may try some 50 series to see how they sound.
I have 2/2 chamber 40 series Flowmasters on my L and so far I'm pleased. I wanted to go with an x pipe, but as was mentioned here, there's really no room underneath. I can't say I've noticed any significant gains in torque, certainly no loss in power or torque. They sound good, especially at WOT.
