Free radar detector checkup
Our local police department is giving free detector checkups. They have this mobile radar unit that they set up around town. It checks your speed and then displays how fast you are going. I found it last night and went past it a couple of times to see how far away my detector could pick it up. It's like a free how to use your detector session. Their other favorite thing to do is leave it in a spot for a couple of days and then have a car sit next to it and zap you as you go through. The mobile unit uses K and the cars around here are using Ka. The V1 tells you what bands are there and how many. How says education provided by the government isn't any good.
I know in my area (so. fl.) when they leave the stationary radar the signal strength is considerably stronger that the hand held units. I don't know if I would use that as a guide. I have an area when there are consistantly 3 signals registering (alarms, door openers etc.) which have the telltale sound of radar and when my V1 sez 4, sure enuf a boogie is there. The V1 has paid for itself many times over and I wouldn't consider any other type.
Ken@Ft. Lauderdale - You are right about the ones in the cars being somewhat weaker. I just thought that having a constant on radar signal in a fixed location provided a good opportunity to see how all the little lights and alarms worked. It is better than having to figure it out on the fly and when it counts.
