Post lightning motor (lightning bob)

this may be done to death but i'm new hear so i've been spending alot of time going over old threads trying to see what has been going on, somethings are very useful. i recently purchased a lightning crate motor from mike at diversified products, i'm at work and don't have a number handy but they are in MM&FF. i payed 3500. for the motor and it came the with everything except the drive accessary stuff, and i have spent appox. $600. but haven't bought the air compressor yet. one question i have for lightning bob is what were you going to do about computer control. i hooked up with a guy ford motor sport referred me to and he is going to build me a computer and wiring harness. he said he starts out with a t-bird sc computer, i think its a ecc-4, anyways i was just wondering what you might be thinking about using.

Why don't you buy a 'flip chip' from one of the guys here? Or does that motor not come with wires?

tundra, i'm sorry but i don't know what a flip chip is. the motor came with the harness that goes to the firewall and connects to the injectors and coils and engine management devices on top of the motor. what type of computer will a flip chip work with. will it make it a stand alone unit, meaning can i take the motor and put it anything?

justen, i'm putting this engine in a 92 f-150 and i'm not very computer literate but from talking to ford and the guy that they referred me to (Richie formally of timemachines inc.) that would be very complicated and not user friendly. according to richie i'll be able to hook into this computer via a laptop and do what the chip people are doing because of the series of the computer, much like the mustang guys are doing. should be able to make timing curve changes and so on. i will have to hook up every time i want to make a change which has its good and bad points. i would be able to drive to the track with one setting make a change and race make a change back and drive home. easy to use(hopefully) but more work, i guess. ward

Did Richie tell you what program / software that he would be using as an interface with this older EEC to get you up and running. Will you be swapping out your (COP) coil on plug for distributor-less (coil packs). It would be interesting to know the program / software. The reason I ask about the coil on plug is that with that item out of the way you could even use the Ford EPEC system but with that system you don't even need the EEC it can run as a stand-alone. Just another question for you. What are you using for a transmission. If you were to use the E4OD from the Lightning you could in fact save a lot of money in wiring harness and custom EEC's and software programs. You could just use the Lightning harness and EEC.

BaBolt, i just emailed you some other questoins, but here goes a couple answers to these. i'm running a performance automatics bell housing that mates a c-4 to the mod motor with a gear vendor overdrive. i don't know what software richie uses but he said that i would retain the c.o.p. are you saying that this motor is a stand alone with the lightning computer? would love to hear about it. i'm looking for a the most simple trouble free(ya right) system i can get. richie said it would be that and he would help me tune it in the beginning, he is a real nice guy to talk to, his number is 727-863-0951. some things i know that he has done are the northstar motor in the hurst olds in the latest hotrod and the 96gt motor in a 66 conv on the cover of the apr. mustangs and fords. when i called ford this is the guy they said could do it.

Hey, no prob., its the brains of the Lightning motor. I am assuming you are mating the engine to a manual transmission(c-4?(no clue what that means)). Anyways, the flip chip is a chip with 2 settings, one stock, and the other performance.

You already said the motor comes with a wiring harness but no computer, and thats what the chip is, the computer. It does everything from the timing to the firmness of the chip to the redline, even the gear ratio for the speedo.

I bet that ford guy is going to charge you big $$$ for what you could get for approx $500 form Sal (PSP), Superchips, or the new guy Swanson. For a custom chip anyhow, I haven't researched it, and its a touchy subject.

If I had the money to blow, I would put it in a fairlane, and bet big $$ at the strip...

BTW, Good Luck.

Tundra the "Flip Chip" is not the computer...
The Flip Chip plugs into the Service port of the Computer...
The "Chips" do not do processing, they mearly carry calibration tables and such, this is all data, not a computer.
You need the ECC (I-V) to use a Chip.
The current production lightning uses and ECC V.

Tundra, the chip is not the Computer. It plugs on to the comp.(piggy back) and then overrides the stock settings, shift, timing and so on. The Lightning comp. can be purchased from Ford for about $600, and I think that would be the way to go. The C-4 is an automatic trans. that came with the small block Fords before the AOD came out.
