Question QUESTION ON NEW SPEAKERS

Just got some new 3-way pioneer speakers for the L. There is no mention of + &- on the speakers or in the instructions. They are 4 ohm. Is polarity no longer an issue in todays speakers?

Speaker polarity (AKA phasing) is still an issue. Check the owner's manual that came with the speakers. Usually, one of the contacts is larger than the other or there is some way to tell positive from negative. Could easily be in a picture in the manual.

Yes polarity is still an issue. Here;s how you can tell. Take a C or D size battery. Put a piece of wire on each connection of the speaker like a foot long. Then touch one wire to the - side of the battery and one wire to the + side of the battery. If the speaker moves out then those wires are on the correct posts. If the speaker sucks in then flip the battery over to reverse the wires and it should move out. Letting you know what side is + and what side Is -.

Thanks guys for the fast answer. One post is indeed bigger than the other and the battery test confirmed that it is the positive post.

noel - if you look on the side of the box, there is a diagram of the speaker wire that comes with the speakers... it shows a + & - pointing to the correct terminals on the wire.
also make sure you hook the wires up to the correct ones in the door...
if you have a volt meter its easy..
with the raido on & halfway up & the meter on "dc"..
touch the volt meters probes on the wires & swap them around untill you get a positive reading..

Well, got the door panels off thanks to OJT from 1BADFRD. These panel come off a lot easier than the old panels with the stab fittings. Pulled speaker and saw fancy connector with no markings. Took my VOM and set on DC mA , turned on radio and by getting a positive reading figured out which wire was +. Took trusty crimp connectors or whatever they are called, connected wires, pulled on connectors to test and then turned on radio. Big improvement. I scored a 4 channel 50WT per channel on ebay yesterday and when I get it I will put the Bose Series IV speakers in like 1BADFRD has, however he kept the back speakers and I;m go to disconnect them and wire directly to the Bose. May not be an Alpine but I'll be in it for
Pioneer TS-A6865 50 wt nom 180wat mx 3 way spkers 1 pair 69.95+10.55sh=80.50
Pioneer Archive amp GMX524 200WT 161.00
bose Ser IV spekers 200.00
AMP INST parts est 25.00
Labor myself 00.00
Total 466.50

Only one question left, I think. Were is the best place to tap off the switched 12 volts for the Amp? I assume that cable connectors/jacks are available that go one into the radio to speakers cable so that one set can go to the amp in and one set to the amp out.

noelvm - i bought a pack of mini fuse taps from raidoshack ($1) and tapped into the raido fuse in the dash for a switched remote wire..

amplify. On the radio there is I assume a female jack where the plug for all the speakers goes. Its got to be either 4 wire or 8 wire. Rather than cutting the wires that come out (to make the amp connections, I'm sure someone sells male plugs with the same number of wires coming out that have bare ends and can be spliced to amp "in". Then you would need a female jack that would plug into the original male speaker plug that would have wires to attach to the amp "out". Where do you get these two custom male and female plugs. I know they are out there because I have found them in the past for many different radios.
