AMW Oil Separator Catch Can
AMW Oil Separator Catch Can
I just bought an AMW Oil Separator from another NLOC member and I had a question about it. When I unscrewed the top and pulled it apart I could see what the filter is. It's basically some steel shavings stuffed in the top piece and held in with a metal ring with holes drilled in it and a retaining ring. Is this right??? Here's a few pics...

Looks like it works on the same principle as a grease catcher over a deep fryer in a restaurant. As the fumes from the fryer goes up the oils all caught by a metal grid. I had to soak them in hot water and degreaser solution at the end of the day when I had a part time job working in a restaurant decades ago.
That's it! The ball of SS ribbon is a coalescer pad of sorts. It acts as a place for the oil mist & vapor to condense & "coalesc" forming bigger oil droplets that drop to the bottom of the can. The scallops on the interior walls keep the oil fom climbing the walls of the can & out the outlet. This unit works exceptionally well. You can get a custom mounting bracket from Garrett (DblG) over at NHTOC,.. http://www.nhtoc.com/vbforum/showthread.php?t=26819 definately worth the investment.
For some reason the AMW can in the pic you posted does not have the bottom drain valve in place, I suggest you put one on before you install,... it will make emptying a lot easier. I empty mine into a freezer bag,..

Lowes or HD should have them in the plumbing section. I did actually get one from Gardner -Wescott (chrome) but it was to big (1/4") & they don't carry anything smaller. I'm using the one that came on the "Can" from AMW.

In my opinion and many others this has been the best choice all along,
Easy of maintenance, never a worry of unseen Varnish build up.
Now Bgstew6 or Stew as most of us know him has developed a self draining setup for the AMW
can and it is currently under going the Black Hammer School of scrutiny.
You guy’s should give these bad boys a try.
There is now another source for these and they sell them cheaper than the manufacture…
