Question Blown R/T ... should I be worried ?

Hi Everyone,
I'm going to the local drag strip this
coming Tuesday and a friend tells me there
supposed to be several Dodge R/T's. One of
which is supercharged. Should this be a
concern? I've raced a few R/T's and have had
no problems not even with modified ones.
Has anyone here raced a blown R/T ?
I'm thinking this guy will probably run low
14's but I'd rather not embarass myself.

If you have a chip and intake.......FORGET ABOUT IT!!!.......If you dont it is time to get one. That is the real difference with stock lightnings and those with chips.Stock they are fast and you can beat all modded R/Ts and modded up 454ss and so on.Without a chip and filter,A supercharged dakota r/t will give you a run depending on how modded it is.Youve got to remember,Most of them run 14.9-15.1 stock.A s/c should take off about 1.2 seconds. Then it becomes a really good race.If your lightning is chipped...............FORGET ABOUT IT!!! and start concentrating on LS1 corvettes and firehawks. The dakotas Ive heard of are either 14 second trucks or 12 second trucks. There aren't many inbetween

I would be shocked if it runs in the high-13s. I've seen one of these down at the strip where I race at every now and then. It was a nice looking truck, the s/c install was clean, and the owner was nice. But, IMHO, the truck was S-L-O-W. It ran low-14s on drag radials. Yech!

On the way into town ,there is a dodge dealer that sells Kenn Belle (spell?) supercharged dakota r/t's. They had the factory send them straight to the Kenn Belle to do his thing. They had a failry large supercharger on it, but the salesmen (4) could not tell me much about the truck. They couldn't even tell me how much the darn things weigh! They had a total of 5 and found three suckers. One saw my truck and asked if it came with the wheels from the factory, yes, even the ground effects? Yes. There is a black one running around town up here, and I look forward into racing him. Anyone want to guess the price they have on the sticker? $$42,000
Somehow they knew how much horsepower they had, with the mods, and it come to 375 (at rear wheels, according to them). I asked about the torque, and they did not know what torque does. Man, what a bunch of clowns. (The dealer)

Question

ZorPrime,

Im not sure about the Eaton s/c, but for the Vortech it's not good to ice them down when hot.

What happens, is the compressor housing contracts but the impeller stay's expanded. When this happens you lose all the clearance between the to and the rest is big bucks to fix. Had this happen to me on my stang.

I think it would make a good topic, and hope that someone has a real anwser to this on the Eaton.

I do ice down the intercooler, with ice water but do not put ice on the blower it self.

RobG, just a word of warning, there is a R/T down here in Texas at the local track that runs 8.40's in the 1/8th. They are out there and capable of waxing you, so be careful. Of course his truck is highly modified, while mine is not and I am 2 tents behind him. hehe

There is a guy in CedarPark with a red R/T supercharged, 360 with headers, dual 3 inch exhaust, dropped, rims, must also have a cam by the sound. I've run him three times with my LS1 auto Fbody 2.73s (mid 12's at 108 MPH). Kinda of a surprise as he is at least in the ballpark upto 120 MPH. I think my L (filter & chip) would beat him to 100 MPH but the topend of the R/T would leave him the win. IMO. I still looking for him to test him out.

Red...

I drove an RT for about as year... All during that time, the aftermarket computer guys could not disable the top speed limiter. The RT was limited at 112 I think... So you would still have the top end. I'd be surprised to see an RT up to the 140's...

Yep thats what I thought. I was a Mopar man for a long time and I kinda of heard that these trucks were speed limited in top speed. I have not seen under the hood. I can hear the blower and the cam of course. I assume it is a 360. Looking at his truck he has some big $$$$ into it including 18 inch rims. So a DFI or even a car may not be out of the question. If it is a carb that would explain the cam, as I know a few guys with ABodies and blow through carb setups and they all have cams. It is fast and not too many Trucks can dice with a 2.73 geared LS1 FBody with mods.

I did race a 351 L Gen 1/W blower on some twisties, we were about the same speed with me having a slight edge in speed and cornering. The guy goes out with the girl down the street (babe). He has way more into his ride then I have into the L including the cost of the truck. What I like about his setup is that he has a huge amount of room under the hood. Still gen II is way nicer looking IMO.

Question

Are you sure about a 2.73 geared F-body? I thought GM dropped that pitiful thing years ago! Maybe it is a 3.73-then you'd be talking some speed. A 2.73 is a dog man.
Also, a real R/T Dakota comes with those 18-inch wheels,and yes it's a 360 (that's where the "5.9 R/T" comes from).

Nope my LS1 Z has the stock 2.73s the GU5 option is 3.23s all 6 speeds come out with 3.42s. I don't know about being a dog since it is in the mid 12s with a few free mods and a converter. The Z has a sweet spot from 70 MPH to 120+ MPH. Dog? Whatever.
