1BADFRD'S AMP/SPEAKER CHANGE..AWESOME
Got to hear Alex's mods to his stereo last night. Awesome, like the first time I drove my L. He kept the original head unit and cd changer, added one 200 wt 4 way amp, replaced the speakers, and added two bass which sit behind the seats. He made room for these by relocating the cd changer under the center seat which is really great because you can get to it easily which you cannot now. He removed the plastic box from the rear which is easy about 3-4 screws. Alex will you please post the mods, model #'s and what you paid for the items. It's a good way to go for those who want to keep the head unit and cd changer.

Thanks for the compliment. Here are the goodies I have installed:
4 JBL GTO 573 speakers - these are older models, bought them new in box off of Ebay. Cost was about $40 / pair. If you don't want to spend a lot of time looking around, I recommend Polk audio DX7's, they are about $140/pair - excellent 3-way speakers.
1 JBL 200 watt 4 channel Decade series amp - also older model, bought off Ebay for about $150. You can buy any amp really, but not all 200 watt amps perform the same. As a general rule, dont ask why, the bigger size amps are usually much stronger (I am talking dimensions and poundage, not wattage here). My 200 watt is huge and I strongly believe it's output was under rated. I find that 45-50 watts per channel is plenty.
2 Bose 301 3-way bookshelf speakers, there are three seperate speakers in each enclosure including 8" woofers - $250 for the pair.
1 four channel speaker to RCA converter - I found only one of these around that would let you convert for all four channels, most people have had to use two. I haven't lost the balance or fade with this one. Don't remember the brand but believe it or not, I got it at Walmart! - $16.
2 sets of RCA cables, get good ones, I went with Phoenix gold 15 ft.. - $30
Amp installation - $125
Total cost for me was a little over $650. I did a lot of research on trying to find some good woofers and install them with the usual MTX type box. But these Bose speakers just sound awesome, more of a surround sound effect instead of just vibrating windows that I kept hearing with just the woofers and I still get plenty of base. Let me know if I left any critical information out.

Hey Alex,
I see the Bose 301 bookshelfs come in series II, III, & IV. Seems like the series III are 8 ohm and the series IV are 4-8 ohm. Am I correct in assuming yours are series IV?

Yes, you are correct, I have the series IV. They are about $320+tax eveywhere around town. I ordered mine from an electronics place in New Orleans. $244 with shipping included, new in the box. If you want the number, I can go dig it up.
