Talking Back in Alaska

Well, we finally made it back here. After leaving Las Vegas (no pun), Thursday night around 6:30, rolled into Anchorage around 6:30 Monday. Got my first speeding ticket in this truck, 76 in a 70. He said he had me at 80 plus, so I asked to see his radar, which read 79, so he gave me the 'benefit' of the doubt. Ohwell, I think I will contest it anyways...

The trip went pretty smooth, except for the frost heaves, and the loaded bed. No flats either.

In Oregon, I came across a pre-99 Mustang GT, and well, we raced a couple of times, from around 65 - 110, and sure enough, I started pulling, slowly but surely. Anyone ever notice the shifting at WOT when hevily loaded? I think I chirped between every shift, even the 3-4 shift. The drive was lots of fun, especially Vancouver (beautiful women everywhere) and selescted places in Canada, the cops were very friendly . There was a road block outside of south of Williams Lake, 6 cruisers, checking everybody. The sherriff, or Mounty equivalent, was checking my license out and one of his deputies told him this truck was faster than his impala, which he neglected because of his LT1 Corvette engine. I asked him if he wanted to run, but he said I had to pay the fine ($150 - $400) if I lost. I politly said no thanks, and floored it when he let me go. If I had the conversation again, I think we would have run 'em.

best mpg 18.4 in Oregon, over 250 miles, worst 15.1 over 250 miles, still calculating.
I am back home now, just thought I would let everyone know.

This post is not about the L and Kristy don’t read this!

Tundra, I know what you mean about Vancouver women, I was standing at this bar in Long Island and 2 beautiful women came in. I asked the bartender to get one of the ladies a drink on me. Well this was Gary Nalanders wife from Vancouver, oh *****, I think he was the forward for the NHL Islanders at that time, thank god he was home with a broken ankle.

Anyway I meet the other woman also from Vancouver, and had a relationship for about a year with her. While in Seattle I visited her in Vancouver and about broke my neck every two or three minutes, I’m sure you know why my relationship didn’t last so long up there, ha ha.

If there are any single men in the US that are looking for a nice wife either go the Montreal or Vancouver. Oh my god, forget Paris.

Tundra, sounds like you had a pretty good ride. Just a couple questions. One, have you had any experience driving in snow? How does the Lightning handle? I am from Anchorage and I'm sure you know that they do a pretty decent job of clearing the streets after a snowfall. And two, i'm thinking about driving from Anchorage to San Francisco this summer, how long did it take you to get from your starting point to Anchorage? And do you have an easy to follow route that you could e-mail me? Thanks a lot.

Hey nice to know I am not the only one reperesenting Alaska! I was beginning to wonder when another Lightning owner from AK would show up.

Floyd91, sorry for not meeting up with you, I got wind of a job offer that I couldn't refuse. Still waiting for the phone call (don't think I got it)

f1car, glad to hear I am not the only one that thought so. If you ever go back, take 99 north for about 30-50 miles, it was pretty twisty and fun, but not during traffic hour.

akassassin,
I got the Lightning on 18 Oct 99, and it snowed damn good 5 days later. I had to limp home, on chains. Then I bought studded tires from a guy with a 93 f150, w/ 16" wheels, they did not fit, so I went to muffler city and got 17" steel wheels and studded tries (235/75R17) for $800! I also put a couple of sand bags in the bed. I never got stuck, but I also knew when and where to drive. Really need to feather the pedal in the winter, and watch out for the other guy on the cell phone. ABS system works pretty good, don't catch it offguard though. I highly recommend you get the truck underlined and rhino lined if you haven't already.

The trip down, There is really only 1 of a few ways at most to get to Seatle from here, and thats after Fort St. John (1500 miles), we left Seatle mid-afternoon Friday, and got here early evening the following Monday. Thats 2 people driving, 1 while the other slept. We also kept a good pace. There was a total of about 20 miles of road work, and I hope it does not rain whil you go through it, these slicks don't work too well in mud either. Keep you load as light as possible, the frost heaves were like speed bumps on steroids laid by a drunk worker smokin' crack (really). We probably had 1200-1500 in the bed, and I felt the stops of the shocks a few times. Wildlife was abundant. Expect a good 3000-3500 miles, one way. I kep a track record of all fillups from Las Vegas to famous Tok, Ak.

What kind color, and year do you have?

BTW, I will be going out to palmer this weekend for a test and tune, with a friend of mine that just got an Integra type R. You are welcome to go, the 28th. Email me.
