PSI Motorsports
Howdy all, I'm starting this thread b/c my buddy SVTPete is having a little bit of problem with PSI being straight with him on the phone regarding the status of his built motor. I'm not tryin to start major ****e but they have just been BS'ing him (IMHO) for several weeks saying, "Oh we're waiting on the rods", then 2 weeks later "oh, we're waiting on the cam". saying "yea it'll be done it 2 weeks". Kinda reminds me of the whole 2 weeks on a whipple kinda thing. The reason he went w/ PSI was because we got a real good reccomendation from knockout_tx about their work. At a fun ford event this year (humble,tx) we were over at the JDM trailer and after talking to knockout_tx realized that PSI turns some wrenches on the JDM stuff when they're in TX, kinda similar to a sister shop i suppose. Anyway, I am just a bid disgusted with the whole thing and it's not even my truck! Does anyone have any experience w/ PSI outta Houston building their motors? Did it take an extraordinary long time? I would think dropping $9000 + would get you some decent service but it appears to be otherwise. I hope some ppl from PSI read this and have some answers, not excuses. thanks
Start by saying I am no one's cheerleader, I do my own work. Therefore I have not had any direct dealings with PSI, but local rep is very good and prices reasonable from what I hear. Without knowing anything about the situation, I may offer some insight since I have built many motors and been in that business. Unless you have the parts in hand at the start or supplier has it on the shelf, it can easily/typically take 4-6 weeks to receive parts and very often longer. I waited seven months for a cam from Summit that was going to be here next month for more than four months. This was a car of my own fortunately. When I finally cancelled with them I got very quick service from Comp in that it only took two weeks to receive a custom grind.
Do know that PSI has been fortunate enough to be busy, so some time might be wasted due to schedule. If you are busy doing work you have less time to chase parts. Suggest PM to Chillfactor (Texas Knockout) or Fuzzie or others that drop by his shop regularly and/or continue discussions with Patrick. This problem is no different than tuners having problems delivering in two weeks, if they do not jhave it in stock they have to wait "two weeks" as well.

I've met Blaine, Patrick, and the crew several times - they're good people and they know their stuff. But, they are very busy and are hard to get in touch with. I left a message with them to schedule a dyno session, and didn't receive a call back for over a week. Kinda hacked me off, so I didn't return the call. But if you can get their attention, it's worth the wait. Fuzzie has a lot more experience with them, so hopefully he'll chime in.
I believe the problem that you are facing is that you let a dyno/parts shop build your engine. I would have recommended using a dedicated engine builder. You can't go wrong that way.
That said - I have always heard great things about PSI as far as tuning and parts installation.

Now, one thing is that if you have a problem call the shop. I wouldn't suggest getting on the internet and complaining to be helping the matter at all. Especially if it is not even your truck in question(BIGSVT). Parts are here for truck that was not even scheduled to be dropped off yet, the truck just showed up on day. There was not any run around excuses given. We were never waiting on parts such as "cams, rods, pistons" as you said we told you.... oh i'm sorry as you "SAID" we told SVTPete. The motor is being built right now and that you were told in the begining that it would take 4-6 weeks for the motor to be built. SO, I don't see were you think it is you god given right to come onto the WWW and complain about a shop taking their time to do something right the first time. If you want it fast and unreliable then I am sure there are other shops out there to suit your needs. But when its done by PSI it will be right the first time. And perfection takes time.
And cerucker you are in Katy why not run across Kenny C. A truck we built here at PSI. I'm sure he would not have a problem dragging your *** in his built by (in your words) dyno/parts shop builder. His truck has run a best of 7.0 at 99mph in the 1/8 not completing a full pass. He doesn't have a cage yet. SO just to let you know PSI is not just a dyno/parts shop. We build them.
But just for ****s and giggles lets break it down....
Does any one shop make the piston, machine the wrist pins, cast the block, forge the crank, grind the cams, stamp the freeze plugs, die cut the block plugs, press and machine the rods, form the bearings, coat the bearings, coil the springs, cut the keepers, machine the retainers, i could go on forever. My point being is that every shop has to buy parts.
Thanks Bob i know you are not a cheerleader for any one shop. But you understand the business end of the deal.
And thanks to those who have pointed out that my fat fingers are slower than my brain thinks so, I get ahead of myself sometimes. But I went back over my rough draft and made a few changes. So hopefully my punctuation is a little bit better and comprehendible. ooo big words

Once more if you call the shop, please leave a message and someone will return the call if we do not answer, but calling and hanging up is stopping the work going on and will get you and the shop nowhere fast.

thanks for the reply. sry for sounding like an *** esp since it's not my truck. the reason i posted instead of him is just b/c he never gets on and i was curious myself, also b/c of the fact that he wasn't having any luck getting anyone to pick up the phone. I am not aware if he left messages or not, he very well may have called and hung up when no one answered the phone. I know for a fact that he would much rather it take a little longer to have the best quality build, tune, etc. as i'm sure he doesn't want to have to deal with blown motor #2. The only thing I think you're mistaken about it that someone there did tell him that they were waiting on rods one time he called, and then it was the cam the other time and it just seemed like ppl were making excuses. like i said before, sry about coming off sounding like an ***....it prob was a little biased info as I didn't know your side of the story. i hope svtpete will post on here so he can see what the deal is. Thanks for replying.

I have not personally torn down an engine built by PSI. I have torn down engines built by other local shops and I have found all kinds of nasty problems (improper piston/wall clearance, dirty assembly, etc.).
Maybe I've just become a little jaded by some of the things that are going on around here. Some good people have been taken to the cleaners by some of these shops. I myself have been ripped off by a local shop - that's why I started doing everything myself.
Like RedSVT said, I had my engine built by PSI, and have no complaints, I had an 03 block that Patrick had at the shop built, there work is top notch, and believe me it's not that they don't want to answer the phone they have been super busy even before I had my Motor built!!
Yeah now just gotta turn up the boost on my badboy!!(oooopppsss.... nevermind no roll cage yet!!
Don't worry Patrick, Blaine, Morgan and Troy are all good guys, they will take care of you!!
