Off topic - dsl problem
I realize that this is a truck forum, not a computer site, but I also know that some of you are very computer savvy, and I need help, big time. On Wednesday Pac Bell came out and installed dsl on my Macintosh G3 running OS 8.6. It worked OK until I tried to log onto aol (to cancel), and my computer crashed while logging on. After rebooting I had lost the DNS entries in my TCP/IP control panel. I restored the settings, but when I tried to log on via dsl I got an error message "An internal error occurred while setting up the ethernet driver to send and receive ARP packets" (whatever the heck they are). I tried re-installing the ethernet driver, but this didn't help. I called Pac Bell tech support, and they verified that my settings were correct, but I still couldn't log on, and they blamed the problem on a conflict with aol software. I doubt this very much, but I called aol tech support, and essentially they said no way. So, at this point Pac Bell and aol are pointing the finger at each other, and I am stuck without a way to connect via dsl (I am using my old dial-up ISP now). Any constructive suggestions would be appreciated.

I know DSl pretty well but dont know Macs wortha damn. In the Wintel world AOL makes changes to the TCP/IP settings in the computer. I would recommend removing all of AOL then confirming all the IP/DNS/gateway info for DSL provider is correct.
Then of course you will have to figure out how to cancel AOL. If you can translate to MAC I will try to help.... Send me an email

PacBell should own the problem. Call them and tell them you want to cancel their service because it is unreliable. There are many options available for faster internet service. I happen to use Cable Modem (Roadrunner). I had a similar problem when I got my installation. I asked them to deinstall and the problem magically got resolved. My backup plan was to get DSL from my local Bell Company, or wait until the cable system became more reliable.
By the way, I kept AOL. If you have your own service provider, you can get AOL for approx. $10 per month. My kids wanted to keep it for instant messaging. Hope this helps.

Definitely, if they can't fix it tell them to come and get it, it'll be on the front porch waiting for them.
