Raced an 89 Stang tonight
89 Mustang LX sedan, Edelbrock heads, intake upper&lower ,shorty headers, off road H-pipe, flomasters, 4.10 gears the works, but no NOS or supercharger. Claimed to run 12.80s.O.K. 60 and out (yes 2nd gear shift down) he pulled slowly no more than 2 lengths. One more time 60 and out about only 1 length. 10mph roll I jumped him slightly and left him by 3-4 lenghts. Felt bad so went again from 10 jumped him again so I stopped right away, I wanted no excuses. One more time, 10 and out I still jumped him by a little but kept going this time. I pulled about 4 car lenghts and shut down about 100 or so. He never gained. He comes by but didnt stop and said "I gotta go home"." Later"
Question: Is it possible his car runs 12.80s with the mods I listed?
Could me getting a little jump on him make that much of a difference?
I consider this a legit kill, and I think my truck is capible of a 13.20s with slicks.Any info on the Stang will be appreciated. I know my 88 Stang with headers and exhaust, 3.55s, timing bum, short belt and K&N could turn a 13.7 on street tires. Anyway, it was fun.

I'm thinking he was BS'ing, good kill(s). Seems a lot of guys instead of going to the track guess their e.t.'s.

If it had Edelbrock heads (even box-stock ones), Edelbrock upper and lower, 4.10s, exhaust work, and I assume a cam...it should run 12.5s on slicks.
From a 60mph roll, he's gonna run out of gear by 110, though.
From a 10mph rolling start, he should be blowing the tires off hard...unless he's on some good rubber.
I raced a legitimate high-12 sec Mustang from highway speeds when I was down in Houston at FFW (no, I wasn't towing my car at this particular time
). He was goosing it trying to get me to run, and he was a bit up ahead of me. I nailed it at 70 (3rd gear) and pulled by him as he downshifted and started pulling on me a little bit. By 130mph, he had run out of gear. It was kind of interesting...I was out about 2 cars on him and then he was pulling on me...all of a sudden hit a "brick wall". I let off as my L shifted into OD.
12.8x is quick, but remember his car sounds like it was set up for 1/4 mile racing. A stock L is not. The gearing isn't right, if nothing else. It's good for 1/8 mile, but if he didn't have traction, he'd be much slower with all that gear. Again, if it really doesn't run 12.8s with a sticky tire, he should be embarrassed by the tune of the engine with those parts.

I forgot to mention he had an "F" cam and before he installed it he ran a 13.20 at the track with drag radials. He felt the cam put him at 12.80s, he could be wrong. I think he is a legit 13.00 on DRs. He also said he tops out about 120 or 125mph.
Back in January (before I had my L), I met up with several L owners: JoeLightning, JRW67, Yoda and Zonaman at Speedworld here in Phoenix. There was a guy there with an older Mustang LX (probably 88 or so), he had numerous mods done and was claiming he consistently runs 12.8's. Well his first run of the day was against one of the Lightning boys (which on that run did not post the greatest time), but I saw them run and the L had him by about 4 lengths at the end of the track. I have seen numerous Stangs at our local tracks running w/street tires and NEVER seen anyone post better than a high 14. With a built motor and slicks, probably high 12's low 13's, but I've never seen that on street tires.
