O2 sensor colour - any info appreciated
I already checked a couple of plugs and they seemed just fine. I also took the liberty of pulling the drivers side O2 sensor and took a look at it. These things get pretty hot so the normal colour for it is a rusty type of red-orange. It would obviously turn black if it was fouled out. I took a look at mine and it was grey. I gather that this means that there is something contaminating it? Anyone know anything about these things? I figured that since my intercooler resevoir is loosing coolant, this is where it must be going....out the exhaust. The reason I am asking is that I have to take the truck back to the dealer this evening to have them check for the dye in the system.
Any thoughts?

Paul, here is color breakdown for you. Black- normal, whether it's running rich, or normal, it will be black as unburned hydrocarbons going out the exhuast will coat it. Red- causd by fuel additives as well as gas that uses additives from the manufacturer (Hess is one). This will usually also give the plugs a red ting. It doesn't harm anything. White- caused by either a very lean condition, or coolant in the exhauast. If the coolant is minimal enough that it gets burned in the chamber, it will leave white deposits on the O2. If the coolant leak is large enough that liquid goes out the head, it will be greenish. Hope this helps..

i took one of mine out when fooling around with the interceptor thingy. it was also gray/black. i think this truck runs so rich, that everything in the exhaust path is going to get that treatment.
Paul,
Keep us informed as to what goes on at the dealership. I have the dye in my truck at this very moment also. I will be going in sometime this week to get it taken care of and would like to now what comments your dealer gave you for comparison. Thanks

No problemo Jerrod. I am taking it in tonight and we shall see what they find. My thoughts are that they will give me that standard "that is a normal condition". If that happens, then I know they are lying. If it is normal, then where is the missing fluid going in the resevoir?
what a pain. However, I have to follow the process in order to get it done right.

Aha!!!
there is an actual whitish/grey colour on the O2 sensor.
So there is definately something wrong!
thx a bunch Sal!
