Help with PI converter install

I just put in my PI converter and the gap from the fly wheel to the converter when it is seated all the way back to the trans is about 1/2". In the instructions it says if it is more then 1/16 or 1/8 to place washers in between. To me that seems like to many washers, the gap is bigger then the length of the bolts they gave me. So my questions are...

1. Should I just skip the washer and pull the converter away from the the trans by the 1/2?

2. Has anyone else encouter this and what have you done?

3. Any other ideas?

are you sure

that it's a half inch?? I helped a buddy do one and it was like 3/8 I believe and We called Jim and he said it wasn't uncommon and we didn't use washers. Haven't had any issues.

tallimeca, you talked to Jim from JDM?

I am really wondering because the book says "if it is more then 1/16 or 1/8 to place washers in between the fly wheel and the converter"

yes

I don't remember the EXACT measurements, but I know the gap was bigger then what the install manual said. Whip called JDM where he got it, and what ever we had was what you see on almost every Lightning so we didn't use washers. Like I said, I don't think Whip has had any issues. 1/2 inch seems really big though. I would double check it and if it's still that big, call your local PI dealer or any of the tuners. If you have a little bit of space, i would imagine that the distance it has to go to bolt up tight against the flywheel, shouldn't be enought to pull it off the spot on the tranny shaft to run the pump, but again, 1/2 inch seems really really big. I remember having a gap though. Call them. See what they say. Good luck.

Well I have installed PI Conv and all works well, not yet fully road tested as waiting for tune etc.

If you install spacer washers between plate and converter you are moving the location lug in the center on the convertor out of the end of the crank.

This centre lug should fit snug into crankshaft centre otherwise all the loading will be on the bolts, the centre lug keeps convertor running true with crankshaft.

If you run without this being located your running the risk of flex plate failure, the bolts provided with the PI unit are only short, when you install all bolts there is slight play untill there all locked tight.

Before you install check height of PI unit and compare with stock unit.
As I said mine is working fine and would not risk moving centre lug out off crank location recess.

Hope this helps

Ricki

Ricki, That is a good point about the centering lug, I never thought of that, I was just looking at what the instructions said about the 1/16 to 1/8" space.

Anyone else have this issue?

right

that's why i said that when you tightning it up against the flywheel, the space will be gone.
