Question Computer Goo?

Anybody know what that clear goo is that coats the computer contacts? It might help some with potential dealer warranty problems. If you could pull the chip and put a new coat of that stuff on before taking it in, you might be able to avoid the whole "you're chip caused the problem" situation.

The stuff I took off appeared to be like parafin wax. Just melt some and dip the contacts in it is what I would have tried.

What I read on Superchips sites was that it was 2 things: laquer on the board from the manufacturing and grease (wax) I guess from the factory. God knows why. If you clean it carefully you can tell youare going through 2 diff materials

The outer layer is called Humiseal, it is an antielemental coating used to moisture proof electronic components in hostile environments. The inner coating is just PC board varnish, & can be a real bear to get cleaned off the contacts. Go slow, be careful and finish your cleaning process w/a soft clean pencil eraser (art gum works real well, too, and isn't as abrasive).

Jack77,

Humiseal can be had at most electronic component outlets (NOT Radio Shack!) PCB varnish is likely to be had in the same type of place. I don't think the varnish would be necessary, as Humiseal is opaque and if they go to the trouble of scraping off the gook, then they want you bad anyway.

Fun things to know and learn......
