JMI,

Was it an Ace hardware or no?

Go here http://www.rtstuf.com/capecodpol.htm to order them online. Even if you don't use them for your tips you can use them on any metal. The ceramic thing would be a good test run for them. Let me know the results since I don't have an Lightning yet.

CA,

Come over so I can polish your tips... I'll be gentle! LOL

Hey Guys,
I clean the black carbon out with plain on chrome wheel cleaner. That with very little brushing takes the carbon out. Very easy and cheap. I also use scott bright pans on the tips before putting on the chrome tipped Bassani system.

Ok...Never Dull, didn't do the job either. Took a bit more of the carbon off, used like a dozen pieces of that stuff and they all were black! But still dirty, dirty, dirty!

We have a stove with flat ceramic top and it came with a bottle of Ceramabrite which is like softscrub but milder and made for ceramics. I washed with that then rinsed well and put a coat of wax on. The outside now cleans up witha wipe the inside takes a little more elbow grease but it still comes clean..

Ok,I just got done using the Blue Magic,it's a good news/bad news type deal. Good news: it cleaned up the areas NOT coated w/ carbon deposits, and it looks good. Bad news: the areas w/ carbon...well it's still pretty bad,I know it's not as bad as it was,but to the casual observer..it's bad.

Hey guys,

How about masking off the chrome and spraying the inside with hi-temp black. Looks like the way the 'uropeons' do it.

Pacecar 18,

No it was a TrueValue hardware. They did know about the Cape Cod clothes but didn't stock it. Thanks for the info.

Hey NOELVM
How did the Lacquer thinner work out? I have some extremely bad deposits around both tips that go back about 1/4 inch. I can't find anything that will touch it either.

Later...

PFA,

I've got that same nasty crap on mine. It will not come off with anything. I even tried a little Gumout on one of 'em.

This is what I've tried so far:

Mothers Metal polish
Soap and water with a plastic scrubby pad
Nevr Dull
Flitz
Gumout

Never had another vehicle where I gave a rat's patoot about the exhaust tips.

This truck has turned me into an **** sumbitch. Dealers have got to love us.

I use GS27 Scratch remover, that stuff advertised on late night TV. found it in the store (don't use it on the L, though !) and did some scratches in my dad's buick - worked fine. tried it on the tips, and that's all i use now. it gets all the crap off. you can also try Flitz metal polish, which works, but is expensive.

Thumbs up

Hey people check this stuff out!!! I have used a product call Wenol polish. I just apply it to the tips using a soft polishing cloth, rub until a black residue appears. I continue to spread the black residue until it disappears into a light colored film. Next I use a soft, dry cloth and buff the area to a great looking shine. You can get this stuff at most auto parts stores. The red tube is for aggressive cleaning. The blue tube is for plated silver and gold. But I use the blue tube to fill in the areas that the red tube can't, kind of like an auto paint glaze. Its shines alittle better when you follow with the blue tube.

Get a Borla cat back. Tip are double pipe within a pipe. The outside doesn't get hot enough to discolor, the inside is exhaust black...too cool and no house work to keep clean.

Well, I tried everything. The laquer thinner I found in the garage was about 15 years old but it did take some off. Oh yeah, my truck is about a year old and I have never cleaned the tips. Big mistake. Tried acetone, no effect. Tried alcohol, no effect. Tried Neverdull, works but is slow. Tried Gumout choke cleaner, worked better than most. The problem with laquer thinner is it evaporates so fact you can't keep it on to soak in. We use to submurge pistons in in for a few hours and then clean them with a tooth brush. I ended up using a combination of my wifes green and yellow sponge with that 3m stuff (I stole it from the kitchen when she wasn't looking and rubbed with all cleaners including a bio degradeable cleaner that is usually mixed with 90% water which I was using straight. I got the top halfs clean.

My recommendation is to have a muffer shop remove them. Go to a bench grinder with a wire brush attachment and cleanem real good. Then paint with flat black VHT paint and be done with it. I'm too old for this s@#%. Nothing I used seemed to have any deliterious effect on the coating. I finished by washing off with water.

Semi-success here.

Just tried a Dremel tool w/ polishing disc and Mothers Mag/Aluminum polish. It got off the really nasty black stuff.

It's going to be a bitch getting between the exhausts properly, but at least I'm making headway.

if the nevr-dull is turning black, it is working. now if you haven't cleaned them in several months , or so, it's gonna take some time. i clean mine with it about once a month, and wash vehicle once a week. mine look brand new. so if yours look like the toilet at the gas station, don't expect a shot of lysol to make it better
