Tonneau Covers. Its time to get a Tonneau cover for my 00 Lightning. Anyone have any experience on the roll top covers? The dealers really praise "Rock n Lock". I am also considering "Specialty Covers" version but theirs is very expensive. Or are the hard top covers the way to go?

DFW Camper - I went without the grip. They are supposedly tough to keep aligned. Plus Dont have the numbers but think lid bed rug install and rug on lid was like ~$1100.00.

Alpha - I am not going to pay some ungodly amount of money to have body work done just so I can give a cop an excuse to write a ticket... But the way the rock chips and scrapes are building up I will likely have the Ground effects worked on in a year or so and will reevaluate the bracket issue at that time.

Doug,

They didn't put the license plate bracket on the front of my L, and I really don't want to put it on now that I have my plates. But in Texas we have to have something there on the front, right?

And what would the 'body work' part have to do with it?

Pritch

Lets hook up and make some noise some time !!
The body work would be to fill the holes.

Texas says you must have front plate but it is a rare ticket.

MRBBQMAN, how is it holding up, is the vinyl fading and does it role up and down without any problems. I want to get it but not if it will look like crap in a couple of years.

JacsLightning,
Heres a pic of my L with a Snuglid. If you get the Snuglid, make sure to specify no trim and I also had mine carpeted to match the Bedrug. The carpeting they did was a perfect job.

I have a Roll Top Cover made by Pace Edwards. It is installed on my Dodge full size. It is the second vehicle I have had one on. Here are the pros and cons:

Pros:

If you need to haul something tall, no problem.
It has locks so you can secure personal items.

Cons:

Difficult to roll into the closed position.
The vinyl material fades to a dark grey really fast.
It is hard to keep clean, the dirt tends to collect in the vinyl cracks.
When stored in the open position, then unrolled, both of mine had a depression/dimple mark in the center of it.
You lose about a foot of cargo space in the front.
They do leak, in the rain around the edges, granted, not bad, but non-the-less it is not a perfect seal.
The aluminum anodized side rails fade bad very quickly. (anodized aluminum does not withstand direct sunlight very well).

Would I put one on my Lightning--no way. However, would I buy one on the next truck that I use for utility purposes, yes. The fact that you can close it, lock it and then unroll it to haul tall items is a very nice feature. But if you are looking for something to put on and have it look nice, then this is not the product for you. Hope this helps in your decision making.

Thumbs up

i have the roll-n-lock /bedreg combo on mine. pace edwards does not make one for the "L". i like the fact that you can use the "L" like a truck and haul anything with it. it is very strong (you can stand on it), doesn't leak, really does it all, and ought to for 900.00.

Thanks Peter, all my fears were answered by you. I think I will start looking for a hard top that is flush mounted. I know *******'s makes a good quality top but I do not like them because they are not flush mounted and they are heavy. Anyone out there have any recommendations on a hard top?
