Post rear quarter hips rock damage

The leading edge of my L's right rear wheel house has a paint gouge that looks like it came from a rock impact. Is anyone else seeing this kind of damage? I figure that under some circumstances rocks thrown up by the front tires can do this... should I be looking at some sort of mini mudflap to put a stop to it? Yikes, would that be ugly or what?

I was looking into maybe getting the molded mudflaps that Ford sells...they're "supposed" to conform to the flareside shape..

The older Rangers (pre-93) used a clear "tape" in the same area, I would imagine the 3M invincia shield stuff discussed here a week or so ago is the same priciple.
